Liverpool have finally got their man. Bradley Barcola is a Liverpool player after completing a move from Paris Saint-Germain worth an initial £106million, with the deal potentially climbing by another £17m in add-ons.

The France international has signed a five-year contract at Anfield after one of the summer’s longest-running transfer pursuits reached its conclusion.

Liverpool will also make a £4.3m solidarity payment connected to the sell-on agreement Lyon negotiated when Barcola joined PSG in 2023.

It represents another enormous investment from Liverpool and gives new head coach Andoni Iraola the attacking reinforcement he has been waiting for.

At £106m before add-ons, Barcola becomes the third most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, behind Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, who both arrived last year.

Those are significant words from a player Liverpool have pursued throughout the summer. There was no need to sell him on Anfield. Barcola already knew where he wanted to go.

Negotiations involved some of the most senior figures at both clubs.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, chief executive Billy Hogan and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon were involved in discussions, alongside PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Barcola arrives after scoring 13 goals and supplying seven assists across 49 appearances for PSG last season. Those are respectable numbers, particularly given the competition he faced for a regular starting position under Luis Enrique.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue were frequently preferred, leaving Barcola without the guaranteed prominence a player of his age and ability would want.

Barcola was an unused substitute as PSG defeated Aston Villa in the European Super Cup, before being omitted completely from the matchday squads against Lens, Rennes and Lille.

The Lyon academy graduate featured in all eight of France’s matches at this summer’s World Cup, scoring three goals and demonstrating why Liverpool were prepared to commit such an extraordinary amount of money to secure him.

His appeal is easy to understand.

Liverpool require pace, penetration and someone willing to attack defenders. Barcola provides all three. At 23, there should also be considerable development still to come.

That matters when a transfer package can potentially reach £123m.

Liverpool have bought potential before. At this price, they are also buying a player expected to make an immediate difference.

Iraola Gets His Liverpool Game-Changer

This transfer saga needed an ending. Liverpool needed the player even more.

Iraola inherited a side requiring fresh energy in attack and Barcola gives him something Liverpool have badly needed, a winger capable of receiving possession and immediately putting defenders on the back foot.

There is purpose to his running. There is pace, confidence and unpredictability.

Liverpool have spent much of the summer searching for the player capable of bringing genuine excitement back to their forward line. Barcola was always the name supporters were watching most closely.
