Liverpool Finally Get Their Win as David Lynch Identifies Five Key Factors

Liverpool finally have their first Premier League victory under Andoni Iraola, and David Lynch believes there was plenty to encourage in the 2-0 win over Ipswich Town.

Speaking in his post match YouTube analysis, Lynch highlighted five major positives from a night when Alexander Isak struck twice inside nine minutes before Liverpool successfully controlled proceedings.

For Lynch, the significance went beyond three points.

“This feels like an important win,” he said, pointing towards Liverpool’s back to back 2-2 draws and the need for Iraola to establish momentum. “You need to start building wins. You need to get the points for starters, but you need to start building that confidence and getting the buy in from the players.”

1. Liverpool Finally Learn How to Manage a Game

Perhaps Lynch’s biggest takeaway concerned what happened after Liverpool went 2-0 ahead.

Ipswich finished with 14 shots compared with Liverpool’s 10, while expected goals stood at 0.73 for the hosts and 0.66 for the visitors. Lynch stressed that context was important because Liverpool established their advantage so early.

In the second half, expected goals stood at only 0.19 to 0.23.

“That is basically nothing happening,” Lynch said.

For a Liverpool side that struggled to protect positions last season, this mattered enormously.

“Liverpool just kind of manage their way through the game,” Lynch explained. “So they shown an improvement already on something that was a massive Achilles heel for them last season.”

He described the second half as “an absolute non-event”, something he viewed positively given Liverpool’s position.

2. Alexander Isak Looks Ready to Deliver

Isak was inevitably central to Lynch’s analysis after scoring both goals.

“He started this season like a man who looks absolutely determined not to take that tag and not to go down as an expensive flop because he looks absolutely on it,” Lynch said.

The striker now has three Premier League goals this season.

Lynch particularly admired Isak’s movement, including his work before the second goal when he returned from an offside position before making another run.

“He looks fit. He looks sharp,” Lynch said.

His assessment went even further.

“You’ve got one of the best strikers in the world and that is incredibly important.”

3. Cody Gakpo and Ronald Araujo Strengthen Iraola’s Options

Cody Gakpo supplied both assists and continued a productive start that has delivered one goal and three assists.

Lynch believes Iraola’s football could suit him.

“I think he’s going to really enjoy playing this kind of football,” he said.

There was also significant praise for Ronald Araujo following his performance at right back.

Araujo won three of four ground duels, all six of his aerial duels, made seven clearances and was not dribbled past.

“I thought he was absolutely magnificent tonight,” Lynch said.

His ability to operate at right back could also provide greater balance alongside Milos Kerkez.

“If it’s a meritocracy and you keep the shirt, if you play well, then I think he’s got to keep his place.”

4. Alexis Mac Allister Answers Questions

Lynch also admitted Alexis Mac Allister’s display forced him to reconsider some previous concerns.

“But look, he was excellent tonight. And I have to point that out,” he said.

Mac Allister won four of six ground duels, made four tackles and recorded five recoveries.

Lynch remains aware of the midfielder’s physical limitations, but praised his positional awareness.

“In terms of the intelligence of him as a midfielder, I think he’s probably the best out of all of them that Liverpool have got at the moment.”

Lynch believes finding the correct midfield combinations could allow Iraola to maximise those qualities.

5. Florian Wirtz Offers Another Reason for Optimism

Florian Wirtz completed Lynch’s major positives after another influential display.

During Liverpool’s strongest attacking period, Lynch felt the German was central to their football.

“I just thought Wirtz was kind of pulling the strings everywhere.”

Wirtz covered more distance than anybody else on the pitch and completed a match high three dribbles.

“He still worked his socks off,” Lynch added.

That combination of technical quality and work rate left Lynch excited about Liverpool’s direction under Iraola.

“I think this game is a move in the right direction,” he concluded. “It’s not perfect, but the journey looks, you know, promising, I would say.”

After waiting months for another competitive victory, Liverpool finally have one. For Lynch, the fast start, Isak’s goals, improved game management and encouraging individual performances provided tangible evidence of progress.
