That sums it up neatly. Wirtz was inventive, sharp between the lines and consistently able to find the right pass at the right time. Bradley Barcola should have converted one of those moments early in the second half after being sent through by the German. He dragged the finish wide, and Wirtz was denied the assist his display deserved.
Champions League display hints at stronger season
There has been pressure on Wirtz, and rightly so. Seven goals in 53 games is not enough for a player of his quality and profile. Liverpool need more output, simple as that. Creativity is valuable, but attacking midfielders and forwards are judged on decisive contributions. That part of the conversation will not disappear until the numbers improve.
Still, there are signs that his understanding with Alexander Isak is growing. Wirtz has looked more comfortable in recent weeks, and the movement ahead of him is giving him better options. Against Atletico Madrid, he repeatedly found pockets of space and played with purpose. This was not decorative football. It had edge, intent and consequence.
He also became more influential as the game wore on, which matters against a side like Atletico. These matches can become clogged, spiteful and awkward. Wirtz handled it well. He kept asking questions and kept moving Liverpool forward.
Liverpool need end product to match the quality
The next step is obvious. Wirtz has the balance, vision and technical quality to hurt top sides. Now he needs goals and assists to match the eye test. If that follows, Liverpool will have far more than a stylish operator. They will have a genuine difference-maker in the Champions League and beyond.
