Juventus Monitor Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool Contract Question Grows

Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool is beginning to attract attention beyond Anfield, with Juventus reportedly making checks on the captain ahead of what could become an important decision next summer.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus sent a representative to Amsterdam to watch Van Dijk during the Netherlands’ 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany. It appears to be an early stage of their assessment rather than evidence of advanced negotiations, although the interest is significant given his contractual position.

Van Dijk’s Liverpool deal expires in the summer of 2027, meaning the coming months will inevitably bring greater scrutiny unless fresh terms are agreed.

Juventus Begin Van Dijk Checks

Van Dijk signed his current two-year contract in April 2025 and Liverpool have yet to offer another extension. The defender will turn 36 before the beginning of the 2027-28 campaign, making this a decision that requires careful consideration from all parties.

Following Liverpool’s recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, Van Dijk said he was “just focusing on the present” when questioned about his future, with nothing new to report regarding contract discussions.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Juventus representative attending the Netherlands fixture was accredited as an assistant to technical director Ricky Massara and sporting director Marco Ottolini. He is also reported to have close connections with Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti.

That level of representation suggests Juventus are doing their homework.

Liverpool Face Familiar Contract Decision

Van Dijk remains a hugely important figure for Liverpool under Andoni Iraola. His experience, authority and understanding of the demands at Anfield continue to make him valuable, regardless of the inevitable questions surrounding age.

The Netherlands international has made 380 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League titles in 2020 and 2025.

For Juventus, that pedigree understandably carries appeal.

The Italian club are reportedly considering several potential free-agent opportunities, with Fikayo Tomori, Mateo Kovacic and David Raum also being monitored.

La Gazzetta dello Sport indicates there are no concerns about Van Dijk’s quality. Physical condition and his ability to continue operating at the required level are understandably factors being considered.

Bremer Transfer Could Open Door

Juventus’ interest may also depend upon the future of Gleison Bremer.

The Brazilian defender continues to attract attention from Premier League clubs and, according to the report, Van Dijk could become a more realistic option should Juventus sell Bremer next summer.

That creates several moving parts before any transfer becomes plausible.

Liverpool will have their own decision to make. Van Dijk has been one of the defining players of the club’s modern era, surviving managerial transitions from Jürgen Klopp to Arne Slot and now Iraola while retaining the captaincy.

Juventus making enquiries should therefore come as little surprise. Elite clubs regularly explore experienced players approaching the end of their contracts.

What happens next depends heavily on Liverpool.

Our View

There will understandably be some concern among Liverpool supporters when Juventus and Virgil van Dijk appear in the same transfer report, especially with his contract now entering its final year.

But there remains a straightforward solution.

If Van Dijk continues performing at a sufficiently high level this season, Liverpool should seriously explore extending his stay. Age matters, but so does performance, availability and influence. Few centre-backs possess his experience, leadership and understanding of what playing for Liverpool demands.

Iraola is overseeing another period of change at Anfield. Having Van Dijk around while younger defenders develop could prove enormously valuable, particularly following Ibrahima Konaté’s departure.

That does not mean Liverpool should offer a long contract regardless of circumstances. Any agreement has to reflect Van Dijk’s age and anticipated role. A carefully structured extension could suit everyone.

Juventus will know precisely why Van Dijk is attractive. A player of his pedigree potentially becoming available without a transfer fee creates an obvious opportunity.

Liverpool should know his value even better.

Hopefully this becomes another contract discussion that ends with Van Dijk remaining at Anfield, provided his performances continue to justify it. Losing such an influential captain for nothing would leave Liverpool replacing far more than a centre-back.
