Liverpool Transfer News: Why Daniel Banjaqui Could Be the Ideal Right Back Signing
Liverpool’s interest in Benfica youngster Daniel Banjaqui has attracted considerable attention, with Dave Davis and Dr Phil Barter identifying the 18-year-old as an outstanding prospect who could address a significant weakness in the squad.
Speaking on Anfield Index’s Transfer Market Metrics podcast, Davis and Barter examined the defender’s physical attributes, technical qualities and statistical performances, explaining why some of Europe’s biggest clubs are pursuing his signature.
Daniel Banjaqui’s Physical Qualities Impress Liverpool Analysts
For Barter, the attraction begins with Banjaqui’s suitability for the demands of Premier League football.
“He’s an actual right back,” Barter explained, highlighting the player’s natural understanding of the position.
“If you watch his footage as well, he’s tall, athletic,” he added, before emphasising the youngster’s pace, defensive solidity and ability to contribute going forward.
Davis was equally impressed by the defender’s physical development.
“He’s built like a middleweight boxer, isn’t he?” Davis observed. “He’s an absolute unit strength, but he is quick as you said and good on the ball.”
That combination appears particularly relevant to Liverpool’s recruitment priorities, with both contributors repeatedly emphasising the importance of adding physicality alongside technical ability.
Barter believes Banjaqui already possesses the fundamental defensive qualities required at the highest level.
“He can already defend, right? You haven’t got to teach your kid how to defend. He can do that.”
Liverpool Target’s Defensive Statistics Highlight His Potential
Barter examined Banjaqui’s performances against established European opposition, including a September encounter with Milan.
The figures discussed on Transfer Market Metrics offered an encouraging picture of his capabilities.
-
Five tackles against Milan
-
Five ball recoveries
-
82% passing accuracy
-
33 km/h maximum speed
-
Just under 10 kilometres covered
Barter also referenced Banjaqui’s performance for Portugal Under-21s against the Czech Republic, praising his positioning and individual defending.
“Good positional sense, defended one v one really well, and helped his team get up the pitch,” he explained.
Recovery speed was another important consideration.
“I think he’s very good at recovering because he’s got that pace as well. So, if he does get caught high, he can get back and support.”
Barter acknowledged the inevitable development required from an 18-year-old, while expressing considerable confidence in the player’s existing abilities.
£40 Million Valuation and European Competition
Davis highlighted reported interest from Arsenal, Bayern Munich and other major European clubs, while noting Liverpool’s previous attention to Banjaqui.
“Can you see why all the big European clubs are in for this kid?” he asked.
Barter’s response was emphatic.
“Yeah, 100%.”
With Benfica reportedly seeking approximately £40 million, Davis questioned whether that valuation represented a significant obstacle.
Barter considered the potential investment worthwhile.
“40 million pound for someone who could be a starter for years to come.”
He also identified the opportunity to develop Banjaqui over multiple contracts, suggesting that his age and existing abilities offered considerable long-term value.
“For 40 million pound that could be a great deal. Really good deal.”
Why Daniel Banjaqui Emerges as Liverpool’s Preferred Option
The discussion also examined Lens defender Ismaëlo Ganiou, whose versatility offers a different solution at right back.
However, Barter favoured Banjaqui because of Liverpool’s need for a specialist full-back, particularly if Ronald Araújo’s move becomes permanent.
“I think we do need a fullback which means you go and get someone like Benju who can play that fullback role.”
Barter believes Banjaqui could improve Liverpool’s ability to progress possession down the right without compromising their defensive structure.
“Yes, that’s the profile of player I think we should be getting to play fullback because I think he could unlock that side without diminishing the defensive ability because he can defend.”
Davis concluded with an enthusiastic assessment of the Benfica youngster’s potential.
“This kid is a special talent and that’s why all of Europe is looking at him.”
For Liverpool, the question now concerns whether that interest can develop into a successful transfer, with Davis and Barter clearly identifying Daniel Banjaqui as their leading right-back candidate.
