Liverpool’s Champions League Man of the Match

Bradley Barcola

Liverpool travelled to Austria looking to put the disappointment of the Manchester City defeat behind them, but even the most optimistic supporter would have struggled to predict a nine-goal thriller.

My pre-match prediction was LASK 1–2 Liverpool. The Reds had other ideas.

A 6–3 victory was emphatic, entertaining and, most importantly, offered the first real glimpse of the attacking cohesion that Andoni Iraola needs to develop if this Liverpool side is going to compete consistently at the highest level.

At the centre of it all was Bradley Barcola.

Barcola silences the doubters

The French international has endured a mixed introduction to life at Liverpool, but this was the sort of performance that explains why the club invested so heavily in his talent.

Despite having played only a handful of games for the Reds, Barcola delivered a clinical hat-trick built on intelligent movement, sharp finishing and an instinctive understanding of where opportunities would emerge.

His opening goal demonstrated his composure, arriving at exactly the right moment before guiding the ball beyond the goalkeeper. The second and third were equally encouraging, showcasing his desire to attack the most dangerous areas of the penalty box and punish defensive uncertainty.

There was no hesitation in his finishing and no shortage of confidence.

This is precisely what Liverpool need from their wide forwards. Pace is important, but it must be accompanied by intelligent movement, a willingness to attack space and the composure to make the right decision when a chance arrives.

Barcola delivered all three.

The hat-trick will inevitably attract attention, but his overall performance was just as encouraging. He looked sharper, more decisive and increasingly comfortable within Iraola’s attacking structure.

One excellent European evening does not erase every question surrounding a new signing, but it provides a significant confidence boost ahead of the weekend.

Liverpool finally find their attacking rhythm

Barcola deservedly takes the award, but there were several other positives.

Lewis Koumas was excellent, pressing relentlessly and offering the energy and directness that Iraola demands from his forwards. His movement and work rate made him a constant nuisance for the LASK defence.

Florian Wirtz also demonstrated his quality, showing superb awareness to provide an assist and helping Liverpool create opportunities through intelligent positioning and creative passing.

Ronald Araújo was another standout, bringing his usual physical presence while showing a genuine appetite to attack. His powerful header opened his Liverpool account and offered another dimension to the team’s threat from set pieces.

Jérémy Jacquet continued to impress with his composure and defensive awareness, while Trey Nyoni again demonstrated his potential in the deeper midfield role.

There are, of course, concerns. Conceding three goals is unacceptable for a side with Liverpool’s ambitions, and the second-half changes contributed to a loss of defensive control.

But the attacking improvement was unmistakable.

Liverpool moved the ball with greater purpose, attacked spaces more aggressively and looked far more cohesive in the final third.

That is exactly what Iraola will want to see repeated against Brentford this weekend.

Barcola has made his statement. Now Liverpool need to turn this European performance into consistent Premier League form.

Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction:

LASK 1–2 Liverpool

LASK 3–6 Liverpool
