Liverpool midfielder currently expected to leave in surprise exit – Journalist
Alexis Mac Allister’s performances are making him increasingly difficult to replace. Yet David Lynch still expects Liverpool’s contract situation with the midfielder to point towards a departure rather than a long-term extension.
The contrast is striking after Mac Allister scored twice in the 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal. He has become an influential figure in Andoni Iraola’s midfield, contributing both defensively and in the final third.
Speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch praised that revival while explaining why he would be surprised by a change in Liverpool’s approach. His assessment concerns a possible summer exit, rather than a confirmed transfer or agreement with another club.
David Lynch questions prospect of contract reversal
“I still would be massively surprised if there was a U-turn at this point on him, to be honest,” Lynch said.
“Not because he’s not playing absolutely brilliantly, but I think his next contract he’ll probably be looking for five years. He’s 28 in the next couple of months. Is that the kind of contract Liverpool will offer him? I’d be really surprised.”
The distinction is between evaluating current performance and committing to a lengthy future agreement. Lynch believes the likely terms of the next contract remain an obstacle despite Mac Allister’s excellent form.
The suggested five-year demand is Lynch’s expectation, not a disclosed negotiating position from the player’s representatives.
Even with that qualification, it explains why he does not regard the recent improvement as sufficient to assume an extension will follow.
Mac Allister revival makes Liverpool decision harder
Lynch was emphatic about the midfielder’s level against Villarreal and across his recent appearances.
“He’s been superb. Literally as good as he was in the title-winning season,” he said.
“He’s genuinely back to that form. So good on both sides of the ball. He breaks up play brilliantly. He’s in the right place at the right time an awful lot.”
Those qualities have given Liverpool a player capable of helping recover possession and then using it productively. His goals against Villarreal were the most visible contributions, but Lynch also highlighted his creativity and positional range.
“He can play as a 10, he can play as a six, and basically has to do both of those things in the role that he’s in at the moment.”
That balance makes the question of replacing him more demanding than simply finding another central midfielder.
Younger midfield options feature in future planning
Lynch linked Liverpool’s interest in other midfielders to the possibility of Mac Allister moving on.
“There are younger midfielders who are on Liverpool’s radar at the moment. We’ve spoken about Alex Scott, Lamine Camara very much so, that just seem to be being lined up as potential replacements.”
That wording leaves room for the situation to evolve. It does not establish that Liverpool have chosen a successor or agreed to sell Mac Allister.
Lynch also raised Spain as a possible destination, particularly if the midfielder maintains his current level. Again, this was a potential route rather than a confirmed approach.
The central point is that Liverpool appear to be considering how their midfield could change, even while benefiting from Mac Allister’s immediate contribution.
Summer departure remains expectation rather than certainty
Lynch acknowledged the difficulty of losing a player who brings so much balance.
“Every time you find yourself in that position, you’ve got to try and maintain it as much as you possibly can. But it just doesn’t feel like that’s going to be the case.”
He added: “It’ll be some job for Liverpool to replace him because he’s flying at the moment.”
That leaves a significant tension between present performance and future planning. Mac Allister is strengthening the team, while Lynch continues to expect a contract outcome that could lead to his departure.
Nothing in the discussion confirms an exit. But if Liverpool do pursue that course, the standard any replacement must meet is becoming clearer with every impressive performance.
