Yankuba Minteh Injury Latest Ahead of Liverpool vs Brighton After £80m Transfer Standoff
Liverpool tried twice to sign Yankuba Minteh in the summer and got nowhere. The first offer was £50m. The second was £60m. Brighton rejected both, then pushed the price up to £80m. At that point, the deal was effectively dead.
That matters again now because Brighton could have Minteh back in time for the trip to Anfield. If he is involved, it will be his first competitive appearance of the season, and the first since Liverpool’s interest failed to turn into a transfer.
Liverpool did what sensible clubs do when a selling side starts moving the goalposts. They walked away. Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain instead, and the chase for Minteh was parked. For now, at least.
Minteh return gives Liverpool transfer story fresh relevance
Fabian Hurzeler has not shut the door on the subject. His recent comments suggested Liverpool’s interest could yet resurface if Brighton continue on their current path and Minteh gets fit. That is the key point. Before anyone talks about future bids, the winger has to play football again.
He has not managed a single competitive minute this season after suffering a leg injury in a summer friendly against Roma. Last week, Hurzeler said, “With Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer we could see quite a quick return,” while also making clear neither would be ready for the Crystal Palace match.
Brighton went on to win that game 5-0 anyway. Minteh remained out. He then missed the 0-0 draw with Jablonec in the Conference League, a result that stopped a six-match winning run in all competitions.

Brighton injury update before Anfield test
The latest indications are more positive. Minteh could have a chance of making the squad against Liverpool, which changes the conversation around Brighton’s attacking depth. Hurzeler rotated heavily in Europe, making eight changes for the trip to the Czech Republic, but Minteh was still unavailable.
Brighton’s injury list has been long enough to matter. Mats Wieffer has been dealing with his own issue, Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson have also been absent, while Stefanos Tzimas, Pascal Struijk and Femi Azeez were listed among those unavailable. Struijk remains a doubt with a thigh problem. Azeez is said to be “getting closer” after his move from Millwall, though this game may come too soon.
Even with those absences, Brighton are third in the Premier League. They have scored 23 goals in seven league matches and sit top of their Conference League group, despite the check in Jablonec.
Liverpool vs Brighton carries edge beyond league points
Liverpool come into the weekend after a 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal at Anfield, recovering from 2-0 down and making it three wins from three in the league phase. That gives the fixture a clear shape. Brighton are flying, Liverpool are dangerous at home, and Minteh is the unresolved subplot.
There is also the record at Anfield. Liverpool have won six of their last nine Premier League home games against Brighton, drawing two and losing one.
If Minteh makes his return on Sunday, he will do it at the ground of the club that wanted him, bid for him, and then watched Brighton raise the price. That is not drama for drama’s sake. It is simply the reality of how this one played out.
