Alisson Becker’s Liverpool Future in Doubt After Fenerbahce Performance Raises 2027 Questions

Alisson Becker’s performance in Liverpool’s 3-2 Champions League defeat to Fenerbahce has prompted fresh questions about his long-term future at Anfield, with journalist David Lynch suggesting the Brazilian goalkeeper’s declining consistency could force Liverpool into a difficult decision.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch acknowledged Alisson’s remarkable contribution to Liverpool while expressing concerns about his recent performances.

“I don’t think he’s quite at the heights that he used to be and so you are starting to see a few more errors creeping in,” Lynch explained.

With Liverpool already having considered Alisson’s future during the previous summer, the possibility of a departure in 2027 has become a subject of discussion.

Alisson Becker Criticised Following Liverpool’s Fenerbahce Defeat

Liverpool’s defeat in Istanbul featured several defensive mistakes, with Davis questioning Alisson’s involvement in Fenerbahce’s goals.

Davis highlighted the goalkeeper’s positioning for the second goal and his failure to claim or clear the ball before the third.

“Even the third, it hangs in the air for so long and you’re thinking, just come and collect it. Come and punch it. Then doesn’t move.”

Lynch agreed that Alisson had struggled.

“Yeah, I thought he had a poor game yesterday. I did mention him after the match.”

He also questioned whether Alisson might previously have prevented Fenerbahce’s third goal.

“Just feels like one he would have saved a couple of years back.”

The discussion extended to an incident involving Alisson’s distribution, with Davis observing that Fenerbahce had an opportunity to score into an open net.

Lynch described another moment involving the goalkeeper attempting a punch as “a pretty ropey moment, really.”

David Lynch Questions Alisson’s Long-Term Liverpool Future

Lynch was careful to emphasise the goalkeeper’s achievements at Anfield before discussing the possibility of declining performances.

“One of the greatest goalkeepers in Liverpool’s history, quite frankly, and one of the best goalies we’ve seen.”

However, he believes age is beginning to affect Alisson’s consistency.

“Obviously he is on the downward slide a little bit now. I think that’s absolutely fine, you know, with age and that kind of comes for everyone.”

Lynch also referenced Alisson’s outstanding save against Arsenal, acknowledging that the Brazilian remains capable of important contributions.

“I don’t think he’s someone you’re going to be able to rely on to have the levels he did previously on a consistent basis now.”

That assessment raises questions about how Liverpool should approach their goalkeeping situation beyond the current campaign.

Could Liverpool Allow Alisson to Leave in 2027?

Lynch revealed that Liverpool had previously considered an opportunity involving Juventus.

“Liverpool had the option to maybe send him to Juventus in the summer. Conversation between player and club, they decided against it.”

The journalist suggested that Liverpool might reconsider that position in 2027.

“But I wonder if we’re edging towards a situation where that decision changes next summer.”

Lynch also discussed the need to assess Liverpool’s other goalkeeping options, including Giorgi Mamardashvili and young prospect Lucca Brughmans, before determining their plans.

“You’ve got to make a decision around where the field he is up to in his development,” Lynch said, referring to Brughmans.

For Liverpool, Alisson’s performances throughout the remainder of the season could therefore prove significant in determining whether the club pursues a change.

Lynch summarised the immediate challenge by saying: “Hopefully good enough for this season. And then maybe in the summer a decision to be made.”

Alisson’s contribution to Liverpool remains central to the discussion, with Lynch repeatedly emphasising his achievements and importance to the club.

Yet the Fenerbahce defeat has sharpened the debate over whether Liverpool can continue relying on their experienced goalkeeper at the level he previously established.
