Liverpool have stepped up their efforts to bring Anthony Gordon back to Merseyside. While the striker played at Everton, he is a lifelong Liverpool fan and this fact could play a big part in whether he leaves his current club – Newcastle United. The 23-year old has had an excellent first season at St James Park and is looking increasingly likely to be a part of England’s squad at the upcoming 2024 Euros tournament.
Gordon has been a key part of the Newcastle attack over the past season with his dribbling ability and fierce striking skills catching the eye of many potential suitors in the Premier League and beyond. So while many people may be spending the summer looking at the apps featured at Strafe for cricket, it seems that Liverpool bosses may be preparing a dramatic swoop to bring Gordon to Anfield.
Will Newcastle be willing to sell Gordon?
While it makes a lot of sense for Liverpool to try and bring Gordon into their attack, there remain big question marks about whether Newcastle United would be willing to let the striker go. Gordon only came to St James’ Park in a $45 million from Everton last August and he has played a huge role in giving the Magpies a chance of playing European football next season. He has scored 10 goals and created 10 more since arriving at St James’ Park.
The one big thing in Liverpool’s favour is the fact that Newcastle will need to tread carefully to abide by the current financial fair play rulings. This means that the Magipes are widely expected to have to offload at least one, if not two, big name players over the summer transfer period.
Already, there is plenty of speculation that Alexander Isak could join Arsenal, despite the efforts of the Newcastle bosses to keep the Swedish striker on Tyneside. Similarly, there is deep disquiet among the Geordie faithful that the Brazilian midfield ace, Bruno Guimaraes, could be leaving to join either Manchester City or Manchester United in order to appease the FFP rulings.
So, although Newcastle look almost certain to be playing some kind of European football next season, it remains to be seen how they will balance the need for a large squad with the current financial fair play requirements.
How Gordon could fit in at Anfield
While Gordon is already a popular figure at St James Park, a move to Liverpool could make sense if the Merseyside club were willing to pay a speculated £100 million move for the 23-year old. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would pay that amount on just one player, but it is clear that a major rebuild is needed of the club’s front line.
Recent efforts to claim the Premier League title have been dampened largely by an ineffectiveness in front of goal. Last summer’s big money signing, Darwin Nunez, has been frustratingly inconsistent, while proven goalscorers such as Diogo Jota have been repeatedly sidelined through injuries.
While Mo Salah has appeared to have overcome his spat with Jurgen Klopp, at the age of 31, the Egyptian star will be entering the twilight years of his peak abilities. Plus with even Luis Diaz rumoured to be heading to Paris Saint-Germain, it looks like Gordon could be a key part of a rebuild.
Gordon was voted Newcastle’s Player of the Season largely through his tenacity and natural skill. While the 23-year old has shown no lack of determination for the Magpies, it could be just a shadow of what he could create should he make the move to his favourite club – Liverpool FC this summer.
