Liverpool Transfers: Former Red Reveals Major Weakness Ahead of Summer Window

Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham at the weekend may have just served as a wake-up call to Arne Slot’s side that were seemingly looking to stroll towards the Premier League title.

Despite the shock defeat, the Reds still sit 11 points clear at the top of the table with just seven games remaining, but the next few games remain crucial in securing the title. That starts with a home clash against West Ham United on Sunday, before a trip to struggling Leicester City the week after.

Wins in those games would almost certainly clinch Liverpool’s second title in five years, which would be nothing short of an outstanding achievement in Slot’s debut season.

However, the defeat to Fulham has also provided a stark reminder to the work that can be done in the summer transfer window.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant spoke exclusively to Anfield Index, courtesy of Golden Panda, and named one ‘fantastic’ Premier League star that they should be targeting…

Where can Liverpool Improve?

When asked where the weaknesses lie in this current Liverpool squad, Pennant was quick to point out the role of Andy Robertson at left-back. This conversation has been a hot topic throughout the entire season and now the Reds are certainly weighing up their options in that area.

“We’ve seen a lot of mistakes from Robertson this season and we’re always having problems down our left-side,” said Pennant.

“He has been a great servant during his time at the club, let’s not forget that.”

The Scotsman has undoubtedly made himself a legend at the club, playing a huge role in Jurgen Klopp’s side that won every trophy possible and is on course to win his second Premier League title with the club.

However, now at 31-years-old, the heavy workload that was placed upon him by Klopp is certainly starting to show in his performances.

His current contract is also set to expire in June 2026, meaning he has just 14 months left on his deal – adding further uncertainty over his future.

Liverpool Tipped to Sign ‘Fantastic’ Defender

There has been a number of names linked with a move to Liverpool to compete with Robertson for that left-back role. Most notably, Ajax’s Jorrel Hato and AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez have been the most prominent names amongst the rumour mill.

It’s the latter of those names that have caught the eye of Pennant, who is keen to see the Hungarian make the switch to Merseyside.

“He would be a fantastic signing,” began Pennant, “He’s so quick, he’s really good going forward and technically better than Robertson, too.”

“He would be a great fit.”

The 21-year-old is expected to cost around £40million but has proven himself as one of the most exciting defensive talents in the league across his 31 appearances for Bournemouth so far this season.

Alternative Options

Kerkez wasn’t the only left-back that Pennant rates highly, with the former midfielder also pointing out Fulham’s Antonee Robinson as a potential target.

“Robinson is a huge talent too, and we’ve seen him perform well against us multiple times now,” said Pennant.

The USA international will be 28-years-old when the 2025/26 Premier League season begins and would likely cost in the same region as Kerkez. This one is certainly more unlikely, but there’s no doubting Robinson’s ability.
