Could Diaz Swap Anfield for Camp Nou This Summer?
As Liverpool prepare for a crucial summer under Arne Slot, speculation continues to swirl around the future of Luis Diaz. The Colombian winger, signed for £37 million from Porto in January 2022, has been a key figure in Liverpool’s attack, with 147 appearances yielding 41 goals and 21 assists. Yet, murmurs from Spain suggest his next chapter could unfold in the colours of Barcelona.
Barcelona Interest Raises Tactical Questions
Diaz’s potential switch to Barcelona, now under the leadership of Hansi Flick, is gaining traction. But while interest is firm, there remains debate in Catalonia about how Diaz would fit into Flick’s aggressive, structured system. Speaking to Sport, international football expert Bruno Alemany cautioned against assuming a smooth transition.

“It’s true that he has an asterisk: he’s a fairly inconsistent player. He can go three weeks without appearing, although he usually puts in good performances in big games. But in terms of pure performance, he’s a player who struggles to find consistency.”
Consistency is the buzzword, and it’s precisely that which casts doubt over whether Diaz can displace current options or adapt to the disciplined pressing game demanded at Barcelona.
Doubts Over Role and Rotation
Portuguese journalist Miguel Pereira, who tracked Diaz closely during his Porto days, isn’t convinced either. His concerns lie not in Diaz’s talent, but in whether he would accept a reduced role behind Raphinha.
“Technically, I think he’s one of the most talented players in the world right now. He’s a player who can contribute a lot to Flick’s aggressive style, although signing Luis Diaz as Raphinha’s backup wouldn’t suit me because he’s a player who’s fit to start for any team in the world. I don’t know to what extent his character would allow him to endure a long substitution. It’s true that he can also play on the other side; at Porto, I saw him play a few games on the right wing, but there you have Lamine [Yamal], who is the best in the world.”
Flick’s squad already includes one of world football’s brightest young stars in Yamal, making Diaz’s pathway into the starting XI a challenging one.
What Diaz Offers a New Club
Yet not all voices are cautious. Journalist Marc Mayola believes Diaz would be an impactful signing for Barcelona, offering energy and unpredictability.
“Diaz is not a box-to-box striker, but he is a high-energy striker, with a sharp, vertical gaze toward goal, who breaks away aggressively, who can score goals, and who combines. A very aggressive player in everything he does, including his pressing. He’s a very Raphinha-like profile, if you’re being clear.”
Liverpool will be reluctant to lose a player of such dynamism, but the right offer, coupled with squad reshaping under Slot, could tempt them to deal. For Barcelona, the question is not whether Diaz is talented, but whether his attributes can be honed into a consistent tool within Flick’s structure.
