Liverpool Retain Long-Term Interest in Gordon

Newcastle winger still on Reds’ radar

Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has not waned since last summer’s failed pursuit. The Merseyside club came close to landing the winger in 2024, and sources indicate that contact has been maintained with the player’s representatives over the past year.

The move initially fell through due to Newcastle’s complex financial situation. With the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) bearing down on them, the Tyneside club explored several options to raise funds before the June 30 deadline. At one stage, Gordon was floated in talks with Liverpool, with names such as Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah informally discussed as potential makeweights.

Although negotiations progressed rapidly, Newcastle ultimately found alternative solutions. Elliot Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest for £35 million, while Yankuba Minteh joined Brighton in a £30 million deal. These transactions enabled the club to meet PSR requirements without sacrificing one of their standout performers.

Gordon’s desire to join Liverpool made clear

Despite the collapse of the proposed deal, Gordon’s enthusiasm for a move to Anfield was evident. During England’s Euro 2024 camp, the 24-year-old was reported to have shared his excitement with teammates about potentially joining the Reds. Reports also suggested that Gordon’s mindset heading into the 2024/25 campaign had been affected, with his “head turned” by the possibility of a switch to Liverpool.

He maintains a strong relationship with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, with the two sharing a history in England’s youth ranks. In a telling moment, Jones was seen liking a social media post linking Gordon to Liverpool, further fuelling speculation around the winger’s future.

Liverpool prepared to strike if forwards depart

With the futures of key attacking players such as Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, and even Federico Chiesa (linked to the club) uncertain, Liverpool are poised to re-enter the market should a vacancy arise in the forward line.

While no official offer has been lodged in this window, sources confirm that Gordon remains a prominent name under consideration. His profile, Premier League experience, and stylistic fit appeal to Liverpool’s recruitment team, who have continued internal discussions about a potential move.

However, any fresh approach will come with added complications. Gordon signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle in October 2024, tying him to the club until 2029. This significantly strengthens Newcastle’s position, should Liverpool decide to open negotiations again. Newcastle, for their part, are unlikely to be receptive to offers. Their firm stance on Alexander Isak last season suggests Gordon will not come cheaply.

Since arriving from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million, Gordon has been directly involved in 45 goals (22 goals, 23 assists) across 105 appearances. His development has made him a central figure under Eddie Howe and a player the club are determined to keep.

Guehi on Liverpool’s radar amid Quansah links

In addition to their interest in Gordon, Liverpool continue to monitor Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who shares representation with the Newcastle winger. As previously revealed in March, Guehi has long been admired by the Anfield hierarchy.

A move for Guehi could materialise should Jarell Quansah leave the club. The 21-year-old centre-back has been linked with a possible switch, with Bayer Leverkusen among the interested parties. While Quansah made a strong impression in last summer’s pre-season, he has yet to fully convince under new head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool’s recruitment activity this summer appears to hinge on departures. But should the right opportunity arise, interest in both Gordon and Guehi could swiftly become concrete.
