A lot of fans saw the success of 2024-2025 as something of a bonus. After losing a manager who had brought so much success to the club, it was not thought of as likely that Liverpool would win the league. But here we are.

The red half of Merseyside was delighted to watch Arne Slot settle in straight away and started to rack up the points. Though the cup performances weren’t top-level, the fact that Liverpool won the league was quite stunning.

It has left the question of where we go from here. What is likely to happen now that Slot has had more time to create his strategy both on and off the field?

Liverpool’s Recruitment Strategy – Playing The Long Game

Liverpool’s strategy could be compared to poker. The movements are decisive when they happen, and we’ve already seen that in the early part of the transfer window. Like in poker, Liverpool made some decisive moves once they knew what hand they had been dealt. People who play poker at an online casino will know the importance of a strategy and a clear way of thinking about the game. There are different types of poker players. Some have a more aggressive approach and take a proactive way of thinking to the table.

Liverpool’s recruitment is very deliberate. Look at the way that the Frimpong deal was put together. It happened quickly, and the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold would make his tearful farewell meant that the recruitment team knew something was required. Jeremie Frimpong has played a key role in the recent success of the Leverkusen team, which has impressed so many people.

Florian Wirtz was a huge signing in every respect. They shelled out a lot of money in order to try and make a statement signing. Paying over £100m for a player is new territory for Liverpool.

Assessing the Squad

Is the squad up to scratch? Losing Trent is always going to hurt. Liverpool’s quick movement means that the right-back position has been addressed. Is the squad good enough to retain the title?

Midfield the Key

Last season saw a big shift in the midfield. The overhaul that began the year before was still settling in. By the end of the campaign, a few partnerships had truly started to click. The squad has energy. It has youth. But it also needs consistency.

One or two players could still arrive before the window shuts. But even without big-money signings, Liverpool’s squad is packed with talent. The key? Finding the right combinations and sticking with them. There’s some speculation about where Wirtz will fit into things and what the centre of midfield will look like.

Attack Still Dangerous

Up front, things look promising. Darwin Núñez is still unpredictable, but that’s part of the fun. Cody Gakpo offers something different, and Mohamed Salah remains the main man. Some were scared that Salah would not even be at the club at this point.

Young forwards like Ben Doak are also potentially looking for more time on the pitch (though they could be set for another loan). If they start well, Liverpool could be dangerous from the first whistle.

Expect the club to be in for multiple strikers to try and get a deal done, and give even more cutting edge. Hugo Ekitite looks like he could be heading to the top of the wishlist after unsuccessful approaches for Alexander Isak.

The Defence Needs a Tune-Up

Defensively, there’s a bit more concern. Injuries have hit hard in recent years. Virgil van Dijk is still a leader, but he needs support. Ibrahima Konaté can be excellent when fit. There’s also some excitement around the next crop of defenders coming through. But a new signing at the back wouldn’t go amiss.

Also, keep an eye on the goalkeeper situation. Alisson is still one of the best in the world, but his excellent understudy Caoimhin Kelleher has now left.

More Money to Be Spent

There have been reports that Liverpool could still spend as much as £200m in the rest of the transfer window. This is even after the significant outlay that has been provided to add the likes of Kerkez and Wirtz.

It seems very unlikely that the Reds will stop there. The huge amount of money being spent will excite fans, but let’s not forget that there are other teams doing exactly the same thing. Manchester City could roar back with their recent signings, and Arsenal continue to spend.

What Will Success Look Like?

Liverpool probably won’t be title favourites this year. There’s too much change still happening. But write them off at your peril. If things click early and injuries stay away, a top-four finish is more than possible. There’s also the potential for a cup run or an excellent performance in Europe. Silverware would represent another great season.
