Luis Díaz’s Bayern Move Signals Shift in Liverpool’s Wage Structure
Díaz Set for Massive Pay Bump at Bayern
Liverpool forward Luis Díaz is reportedly on the verge of joining Bayern Munich – and with it, securing a deal that triples his current salary. According to a report from BILD, the Colombian international is set to earn a staggering €14 million per year in Bavaria, compared to his previous €2.7 million net per year at Liverpool.
The 28-year-old winger, who arrived at Anfield from Porto in January 2022 for £37.5 million, is still operating under the same contract he signed upon arrival. That deal runs until 2027, yet Díaz has not received the typical incremental salary improvements usually afforded to first-team regulars at Liverpool.
BILD reports: “The winger, who can also play centrally, is expected to receive a four-year contract. However, he won’t be among the absolute top earners, earning around €14 million per year.”
Contract Stalemate Opened the Door
Sources suggest Díaz had been pushing for a new deal worth between £140,000 and £150,000 per week – a figure that he would have deserved if the club wanted to secure his future. However, Liverpool were reportedly “either unwilling or unable” to meet those demands.

With just two years left on his current deal and no agreement in sight, Liverpool’s hierarchy likely faced a tough decision: risk losing Díaz for nothing in 2027 or cash in while his value remains high. Bayern are expected to pay €75 million for his services – a respectable sum for a player entering his peak years.
Deal Includes Strategic Sell-On Clause
Interestingly, Díaz’s contract at Bayern is also said to include a Saudi sell-on clause, meaning Liverpool could profit again should the winger eventually be sold to the Saudi Pro League. That potential windfall might cushion the blow of losing a player who had moments of brilliance at Anfield, even if he never fully became indispensable.
His new earnings are reportedly worth €7.7m (£6.73m) after tax, showcasing the dramatic financial boost this move provides.
What This Means for Liverpool
Luis Díaz’s exit signals a potential recalibration of Liverpool’s wage policy under the post-Klopp era. With Arne Slot aiming to reshape the squad in his own image, difficult decisions like this one may become more frequent.
Díaz leaves with warm wishes, but an understanding of why from both parties as he showed flashes of quality that never quite turned into season-long consistency. But few would begrudge him a deal of this magnitude, especially given the lack of contract progression at Anfield.
Our View – Anfield Index Analysis
From a Liverpool fan perspective, this transfer feels like a mixture of pragmatism and missed opportunity. On one hand, €75 million for a player turning 29 next year with two years left on his deal is smart business. But on the other, there’s a lingering sense that Díaz’s peak years will now be enjoyed elsewhere – and perhaps not fully explored under Arne Slot.
Fans will respect Díaz’s contributions and wish him well. But his departure also puts pressure on the replacements who need to outperform the Colombian.
