Former Liverpool star wants two new signings in January transfer window
Liverpool’s win over West Ham United may have stopped the rot, but there are still serious cracks within Arne Slot’s squad.
Despite the victory, the Reds still sit down in 8th place in the Premier League table and have lost nine of their last 13 games across all competitions.
With that in mind, Liverpool have been heavily linked with moves to bolster the squad further in January.
Perhaps the heaviest link has been with AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, who has a £65m release clause valid in the winter window.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock spoke exclusively to Anfield Index and shared his thoughts on a potential move for Semenyo and whether more signings are required…
Semenyo in January?
“I think it’s difficult to work out what Liverpool actually want in the front line,” said Warnock, “Someone in Semenyo’s camp has clearly released the details of the release clause.”
“Is he the right fit for Liverpool? I think they need to strengthen in other areas first,” continued Warnock.

Liverpool already spent over £300m on new attacking talent with the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike all arriving in the summer.
So it’s fair to say that there are other areas of the squad that need improving.
Liverpool need to strengthen elsewhere
“They need a right-back who is going to play every single week,” said Warnock, “I love Conor Bradley but at the moment he picks up far too many injuries.”
“Liverpool need a right-back who is going to play 35-40 games per season and Bradley just isn’t that yet.”
Of course, Liverpool did sign Jeremie Frimpong for £29m in the summer but he has already suffered two muscular injuries inside three months at the club, which is a worrying sign.
Warnock was also keen to point out that Liverpool need further depth in midfield.
“They also need to sign a specialist defensive midfielder,” continued Warnock, “Ryan Gravenberch done an incredible job in there last season but there’s too much reliance on him now.”
It’s hard to disagree. With Slot seemingly trusting Wataru Endo less and less, Gravenberch does need competition in that area.
Liverpool have been linked with potential moves for the likes of Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson. But any movements for a midfielder is expected to wait until the summer of 2026 at least.
