Liverpool Face January Transfer Window Pressure Amid Defensive Crisis
As the January transfer window reaches a critical point, Liverpool find themselves in a precarious position. With serious injuries to key defensive players, the club must act decisively. Dave Davis, speaking on Newsround for Anfield Index, laid out the reality with typical candour, emphasising that the club’s defensive situation can no longer be ignored.
Defensive Injuries Leave Liverpool Exposed
The long-term absence of Conor Bradley has put Liverpool in an increasingly fragile state. “Conor Bradley is now out for the season and they need to look at bringing in an elite right-back sooner rather than later,” Davis said. His absence, compounded by the earlier injury to Giovanni Leoni, means the Reds are left with dangerously thin cover at the back.
Davis was unequivocal about the severity of the situation: “Either way, regardless of these links, Liverpool simply have to sign a defender. We are past the point of being threadbare at the back.” He warned that the club is teetering on the edge of a full-blown defensive crisis: “We’re an injury to Ibrahima Konate or Jeremie Frimpong away from a real crisis.”
Transfer Rumours Circulate Without Certainty
Several names have emerged as potential solutions, but as Davis made clear, few of them come with concrete links. “Givairo Read is a name often mentioned and I would love for it to be true but there isn’t any tangible links out there at the moment.” This underlines a theme of the episode: growing concern over a lack of real progress in the market.
Another option drawing interest is Jacobo Ramon of Como. Davis was more enthusiastic here, noting, “Jacobo Ramon of Como is another defender mentioned lately and there is a lot to like about him.” His attributes are impressive: “He’s a solid passer of the ball and he’s phenomenal in the air, he has won 64% of his aerial duels this season.” Still, Davis cautioned against reading too much into the speculation. “He has just turned 21 and looks really promising but it isn’t really a solid link.”

Guehi Interest Offers Hope For Summer
Looking further ahead, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi remains a longer-term target. “Marc Guehi still reportedly favours a move to Liverpool in the summer once his contract expires at Crystal Palace,” Davis noted. However, this does little to solve the club’s immediate problems. With the January window open and the squad stretched, the need for a short-term defensive solution grows more urgent by the day.
Urgency Without Action
Despite the clear need, Davis voiced growing scepticism about the club’s willingness to act quickly. “We’re now on the 12th of January and there’s not really any confidence that Liverpool will bring anyone in.” This lack of movement has become a point of frustration among supporters and pundits alike, particularly given how thin the squad has become.
