Fabrizio Romano reveals the truth behind Xabi Alonso’s potential Liverpool return
Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth last night has put Arne Slot’s future at the club under immense scrutiny once again.
The Reds have taken just 21 points from their last 18 Premier League games, with just five wins in that time.
As expected, Liverpool fans are starting to show real frustration at the recent performances with many now turning against the head coach.
Xabi Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid hasn’t helped things, with the former Liverpool midfielder one of the favourites to take over in the Anfield dugout should the club call time on Slot’s tenure.
Reports from Spain have claimed that Liverpool have already made contact with Alonso and his representatives over a potential return to Anfield.
However, Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, insists that isn’t the case…
Romano on Alonso rumours
Speaking on Alonso’s reported return to Anfield, Romano gave a firm answer:
“I had many questions on the rumours about Liverpool being in contact with Xabi Alonso to take over from Arne Slot.”
“At the moment, I’m not aware of any official contact between Liverpool and Alonso, or his agents.”
“It’s very clear. Xabi will be back soon. He doesn’t want to take one or two years out. He wants to return as soon as possible.”
“Liverpool already wanted him in the past and they appreciate him. I’m sure he would be a candidate if they choose to change their manager, but I’m not aware of any contact.”
Slot’s defining fixtures
Liverpool now face a huge week of football. A victory against Qarabag would secure them a spot in the top eight of the league phase in the Champions League.
Then, just a few days later, they host Newcastle United at Anfield. This will be a monumental game in their bid to secure Champions League football next season.
As it stands, Liverpool sit 5th in the Premier League with 36 points from 23 games, whilst Newcastle sit down in 9th but are only three points behind the champions.
Should the Reds continue their struggles and poor form in these two games, then I find it almost impossible to defend Slot’s position. Especially ahead of two tricky games against Manchester City and Sunderland.
