Arne Slot sent sack warning as Liverpool’s struggles continue

Liverpool’s collapse in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday has only piled further pressure onto head coach Arne Slot.

The Reds find themselves down in 6th in the league table and now four points behind Chelsea in fifth place.

Slot’s side have managed to take just 24 points from their last 20 league games, which is relegation form.

Fans are really starting to question whether Slot’s long-term future at the club is secure and ex-players are now starting to share their thoughts.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant, speaking to Anfield Index courtesy of BetSelect.co.uk, remains unsure on Slot’s future…

How can Arne Slot save his job?

“Yes there is pressure on him because they’re sitting 6th in league table, it’s not good enough. Especially if you’re the league champions,” said Pennant.

“It’s all on Slot now to make it into those Champions League spots. If not, I don’t think they will continue with him next season.”

The issue is, that is starting to look an increasingly more difficult task for the Reds. Sitting on 39 points from 25 games, they are four points behind Chelsea and five behind Manchester United.

Both of those sides made the call to replace their head coaches. Liam Rosenior replaced Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge, whilst Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Interestingly, both sides have enjoyed a solid run of form since taking that decision. Manchester United are five games unbeaten in the Premier League since Carrick’s arrival and have won the last four.

Whilst Chelsea have won all four Premier League games since Rosenior’s arrival.

In contrast, Liverpool have won just one league game in 2026 and we’re almost at mid-February.

With a tricky away test against Sunderland next, who are unbeaten at the Stadium of Light, things aren’t looking great for the Reds.
