Liverpool Told They Made Mistake in £15m Summer Transfer Deal

Liverpool’s decision to sell Tyler Morton to Lyon for £15m in the summer of 2025 continues to spark debate, especially as the midfielder flourishes in Ligue 1. With Arne Slot guiding Liverpool after a Premier League winning 2024-25 campaign, squad management remains under scrutiny, and Morton’s rise in France has only intensified discussion about whether the club moved too quickly.

Morton finding rhythm at Lyon

Tyler Morton has quickly become a central figure at Lyon, showing composure, intelligence and control in midfield. His ability to recycle possession and dictate tempo has caught the eye across Europe, and it has prompted renewed focus on Liverpool’s long term planning.

European football expert Andy Brassell recently praised the Englishman’s impact, explaining Lyon’s determination to secure his signature. Speaking to talkSPORT, Brassell said: “Tyler Morton actually is a huge part of that because he was someone who [Lyon manager Paulo] Fonseca was, ‘We absolutely must get him’.

“He’s a player who I have a specific use for. I think he can fill this role, and in terms of being able to keep the ball moving in the attacking half of the pitch and take the sting out of the game when they’re not attacking, Morton has been exceptional.

“Liverpool sold him for £15m, he must be worth three times that now, he’s been so, so good this season.”

Liverpool midfield debate continues

Back at Anfield, Liverpool’s midfield options have faced criticism during a challenging spell. Injuries and inconsistent performances have left Slot searching for balance, while fans question whether Morton could have provided depth and control.

The player himself has spoken openly about his final season at Liverpool and the lack of opportunities. He said: “I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much.

“In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability.

“When I got my opportunity in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say. I stuck at it, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the under-21 Euros, which was amazing.

“I had a few conversations with him [Slot] during the season. A lot of footballers can be bitter about not playing and let their egos get in the way, but I’m not that type of lad.

“I personally disagreed with the limited amount of game time I got last season, but that was out of my control. I did everything I could.”

Sell on clause could benefit Liverpool

Despite the growing sense that Liverpool may have lost a valuable asset, the club protected itself with a reported 20% sell on clause. If Morton’s value continues to rise at Lyon, Liverpool could still benefit financially from his development abroad.

For now, the situation serves as a reminder of how quickly fortunes change in football. Tyler Morton is thriving, Lyon are reaping the rewards, and Liverpool are left reflecting on a decision that may look increasingly complicated as the season unfolds.
