Liverpool facing major contract headache as summer window approaches
After winning the Premier League title last season, it has been an incredibly frustrating season for Liverpool. Currently sat 6th in the Premier League table and out of the Carabao Cup, it hasn’t been great at all.
However, there are a few glimmers of hope. The Reds’ form in Europe has been really encouraging and they find themsleves in the last 16 of the FA Cup, with a favourable draw against Wolves.
Another glimmer of hope has been the recent improvement in performances from a number of Arne Slot’s squad. One of those is Ibrahima Konate.
Konate’s performances and contract situation
The French defender had an abysmal first half of the season and with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, all signs were pointing towards the exit door.
Especially with his contract demands reportedly landing close to the £200,000-per-week mark.
However, belief is building that Konate could yet agree a new contract before June. His improved performances in the start of 2026 have certainly strengthened his hand, with a run of brilliant performances against the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City and Sunderland.

Perhaps most importantly, Konate has enjoyed an injury-free season so far, which is something that he has really struggled with since making the switch to Anfield in 2021.
Whilst a firm breakthrough is yet to be found, there is still a willingness from all camps to agree a deal.
The race for Konate
A number of top European clubs had reportedly been interested in Konate. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have been strongly linked, whilst clubs like PSG and Chelsea have also registered their interest.
However, with Dayot Upamecano agreeing a bumper deal to stay at Bayern Munich for the foreseeable and Real Madrid reportedly ruling themselves out of the race, staying at Anfield remains a strong option.
Should Konate maintain this level of form and fitness and help to guide Liverpool to Champions League or FA Cup glory, then there’ll be more and more on board with giving him the contract he desires.
There’s a long way to go in this one.
