Andy Robertson Future at Liverpool in Doubt as Contract Nears Expiry

Liverpool could be preparing to say goodbye to one of the defining players of the modern era, with Andy Robertson’s contract set to expire in June. Discussion around the left back’s future emerged during the Anfield Index podcast Media Matters, where host Dave Davis and journalist David Lynch examined the likelihood of Robertson leaving Anfield this summer.

While Liverpool continue to resolve other contract situations, Robertson’s case appears increasingly clear. As Lynch suggested during the discussion, the signs currently point toward the Scotland international moving on.

Robertson Addresses Contract Situation

The conversation began with Davis referencing comments Robertson made recently about his future at Liverpool. The defender had stopped in the mixed zone and acknowledged the ongoing speculation around his contract.

According to Davis, Robertson explained that discussions were being kept private while a decision was made.

“I’ve got an amazing relationship with Richard Hughes and Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards,” Robertson said, while emphasising that conversations about his future would remain behind closed doors.

He also made clear that clarity would arrive soon given the timing of his contract.

“When a decision is made and we’re getting to the point where I only have three months left on my contract, it will be announced to you guys.”

For Davis, the tone of those comments hinted that an announcement could be approaching.

Lynch Expects Robertson to Leave Liverpool

David Lynch acknowledged Robertson’s importance to Liverpool but admitted the situation appears to be heading toward a departure.

“I’d be surprised if he sticks around now,” Lynch said.

The journalist pointed to previous transfer interest as a key indicator of Robertson’s thinking. Opportunities to leave had surfaced during the last year, including approaches from clubs abroad.

“The very fact that he was at least considering that Atletico Madrid move over the summer,” Lynch explained.

He also referenced another potential transfer discussion during the January window.

“He was considering Tottenham in January, that wasn’t ruled out straight away in the way that if he knew he wanted to stay, he would do.”

For Lynch, those moments suggested Robertson was open to exploring a new challenge.

Desire for More Playing Time

One of the central factors behind the situation appears to be Robertson’s desire for regular football in the latter stage of his career. As Liverpool evolve under their current project, the veteran defender may feel the need to secure a larger role elsewhere.

Lynch believes that motivation is understandable.

“He clearly wants to play a bit more I think in his final years,” he said.

That ambition could make a move away from Liverpool the most logical outcome for both sides.

“It will be the right move for him,” Lynch added.

End of an Era Approaching

If Robertson does leave when his contract expires in June, it would mark the end of a hugely successful period at Liverpool. The left back has been one of the club’s most influential signings of the past decade and played a major role in several trophy winning campaigns.

Lynch emphasised that any departure would come with genuine appreciation for what the defender has contributed.

“For Liverpool it’s a loss of a great servant and a player who’s been fantastic down the years,” he said.

At this stage, the expectation remains that Robertson’s future lies away from Anfield. Unless negotiations take an unexpected turn in the coming months, Liverpool supporters may be preparing for a summer farewell to one of the club’s most reliable performers.
