Liverpool Target Direct Winger as Yan Diomande Links Gather Attention

Liverpool’s recruitment priorities for the upcoming transfer window are beginning to take shape, and one area appears increasingly clear. According to journalist David Lynch, the club must add a direct winger capable of winning one on one duels, particularly against the organised low blocks that dominate the modern Premier League.

The topic emerged during the Anfield Index podcast Media Matters, where host Dave Davis discussed Liverpool’s attacking options and reports linking the club with RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande.

Liverpool Need More 1v1 Threat in Attack

Lynch made it clear that Liverpool’s attack requires a different profile of winger. With the tactical evolution of the league leading to stronger defensive structures, breaking down compact sides demands players who can beat opponents individually.

“100 percent,” Lynch said when asked whether Liverpool need more pace and one on one specialists in attack.

He explained that defensive organisation across the league has improved significantly.

“The way that these low blocks are so good now, so well organised, and the physicality is off the scale,” Lynch said.

For that reason, Liverpool must find players capable of disrupting those defensive structures on their own.

“You have to find ways of disorganising them,” he added.

Changing Role of Liverpool’s Current Wingers

Part of the issue stems from how Liverpool’s current attackers profile stylistically. Lynch pointed out that some of the club’s existing options are not natural one on one specialists.

“Salah’s dribble numbers have just gone down throughout his Liverpool career,” Lynch said.

He described that decline as a natural consequence of age.

“It’s just a consequence of aging clearly,” he added.

At the same time, Lynch suggested that Cody Gakpo’s skill set does not naturally align with the type of winger Liverpool now require.

“Cody Gakpo, it’s never really been his game,” he explained.

The result is that Liverpool may struggle to consistently unlock stubborn defensive setups.

“So much importance on one on one quality,” Lynch said.

Yan Diomande Among Names Linked

Within that context, reports linking Liverpool with RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande have attracted attention. During the podcast conversation, Davis referenced Lynch’s recent article discussing the potential target.

“Yande Diomande was the front picture on your article,” Davis said.

Lynch confirmed that Liverpool have monitored the player closely.

“They’ve watched him extensively and they obviously like him,” he explained.

The forward fits the profile Liverpool appear to be searching for in the transfer market.

“He makes so much sense in terms of profile wise for what they kind of be looking for,” Lynch added.

Leipzig Form Could Complicate Transfer

One complication, however, could be Leipzig’s own ambitions this season. Davis noted that Diomande’s performances are helping the German club remain competitive in the race for Champions League qualification.

“Leipzig are level on points and nearly in the Champions League positions,” Davis said.

He also pointed out the player’s recent form.

“Diomande keep scoring winners for them,” he added.

If Leipzig secure Champions League football, negotiating a transfer could become more difficult.

Lynch acknowledged that the situation could influence any potential deal but believes Liverpool still possess significant appeal.

“Liverpool with their pull with the financial might they have,” he said.

Ultimately, the pursuit of a winger capable of dominating one on one situations appears central to Liverpool’s recruitment strategy. Whether Yan Diomande becomes the solution remains uncertain, but the profile of player Liverpool are searching for is becoming increasingly clear.
