Liverpool Under Scrutiny as Graeme Souness Discusses Arne Slot’s Future
Liverpool’s turbulent campaign has prompted plenty of debate, and few voices carry more weight on Merseyside than Graeme Souness. The former captain and manager recently shared his thoughts on Arne Slot’s Liverpool side, and while he acknowledged clear issues within the team, he refused to be drawn on whether the Dutchman’s job could be at risk.
The Reds remain in the hunt for European progress, yet their recent form has raised questions. A narrow 1-0 defeat in Istanbul in the first leg of their last 16 tie has left Liverpool needing a turnaround at Anfield. For supporters and pundits alike, the discussion centres on whether Arne Slot can stabilise performances during what has been a difficult title defence.
Pressure Mounts on Liverpool After Istanbul Defeat
Liverpool’s loss in Turkey summed up many of the frustrations surrounding the current campaign. Despite heavy investment in the summer and the momentum gained from winning the Premier League in 2024-25 under Arne Slot, the team has struggled for consistency.
Graeme Souness suggested that part of the problem lies in how opponents approach matches against Liverpool. Clubs no longer try to match Liverpool’s style, instead they aim to disrupt it from the outset.
When speaking to talkSPORT, Souness said: “Teams are not saying to Liverpool ‘we’re at Anfield today. Let’s give them a really nice game of football and let’s play the way they want us to play’.”
His point highlights a reality that many top sides face. Liverpool’s reputation means rivals prepare differently, often prioritising intensity, physicality and disruption over open football.

Graeme Souness Highlights Intensity Problem
According to Graeme Souness, Liverpool’s biggest issue may lie in their work without the ball. The Scot believes Arne Slot’s team have lost some of the collective aggression that defined successful Liverpool sides in recent years.
Souness said: “They’re not as aggressive when they don’t have the ball. When you close down you have to do it collectively.”
That lack of cohesion can quickly become costly at the highest level. Souness also raised concerns about the balance of the squad, suggesting some players contribute more creatively than defensively.
The former Liverpool boss added: “Some of them are very good on the ball, but not so good at working hard when you don’t have the ball.”
He also pointed to the form of Mohamed Salah, whose output has dropped compared with previous seasons.
Souness said: “You have to point out that Salah has not turned up this year. The numbers tell you that.”
Arne Slot Question Left Unanswered
While Graeme Souness openly discussed Liverpool’s shortcomings, he stopped short of speculating about Arne Slot’s long term future at Anfield.
When asked whether the manager must win the Champions League to keep his job, Souness declined to give a direct answer.
He said: “I won’t answer that one. I just know that they have to improve.”
Later in the interview he reinforced the same message, shifting the focus away from managerial pressure and towards Liverpool’s traditions.
He explained: “I’m not going to get into that. I know what you want me to say. I think Liverpool is a great football club and historically they give the managers lots and lots of time to get it right.”
For now, Liverpool’s immediate priority remains the second leg at Anfield. Arne Slot still has the chance to steer the club deeper into Europe, but the coming weeks could shape the narrative around Liverpool’s season and determine whether improvement arrives quickly enough.
