Liverpool Transfer News: Jules Kounde Emerges as £69m Summer Target
Liverpool are expected to be active again this summer, and reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has moved firmly onto their radar.
The Spanish outlet claims Liverpool are ‘planning to submit an offer at the end of the season’, with a bid for the France international already being ‘prepared’. The figure being discussed is €80million, around £69m, which is said to be the price Barcelona would require to consider a sale.
For Arne Slot, this would be a significant move. Liverpool spent heavily last summer, including £29.5m on Jeremie Frimpong after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure, but right-back has remained a problem position. Frimpong and Conor Bradley have both had injury issues, while Slot has occasionally used Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones in that role, decisions which have raised eyebrows among supporters.
Kounde Profile Fits Liverpool’s Defensive Need
Kounde joined Barcelona from Sevilla for €55m and has since made 186 appearances for the Catalan club. Although he built much of his reputation as a centre-back, he has become Barcelona’s first-choice right-back, offering the exact type of defensive versatility elite clubs value.
That versatility matters. Liverpool need greater reliability on the right side of defence, but they also require depth centrally. Kounde could potentially cover both areas, giving Slot a more secure tactical platform.
At 27, he is entering his peak years. That is important for a Liverpool side trying to balance immediate expectations with longer-term squad planning.

Barcelona Sales Could Open Door
Barcelona’s financial position remains central to this story. Mundo Deportivo’s report follows claims from Sport that Barca chiefs are open to selling Kounde, Alejandro Balde and Marc Casado to raise funds.
There has already been wider Premier League interest. Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been linked with Kounde, while Deco confirmed in October that City had made contact last summer. Chelsea have also been tipped to launch an ‘aggressive’ move.
That level of competition means Liverpool would need to move decisively.
Frimpong Question Adds Intrigue
Frimpong’s arrival was supposed to resolve the post Alexander-Arnold transition, but his first season has been disrupted and unclear. Slot’s use of him as a right winger has only added to the debate.
Kounde would represent a very different profile. He is less explosive going forward than Frimpong, but far more secure defensively and tactically adaptable. For a Liverpool side whose title defence has disappointed after last summer’s £450m outlay, that kind of stability may be essential.
Liverpool sitting 4th in the Premier League table underlines the need for refinement rather than another scattergun rebuild. Kounde would be expensive, but he would also answer a clear structural question.
Our View – Anfield Index Analysis
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is exactly the sort of report that should generate cautious excitement. Kounde is not a luxury signing, he is a solution to a problem that has been visible all season.
Slot won the Premier League in his debut campaign, so he has credit in the bank, but this season has been far more complicated. The right-back role has felt unsettled, and while Frimpong clearly has talent, Liverpool have lacked consistency and balance on that side. Bradley has huge potential, but availability matters. If Liverpool want to compete on multiple fronts, they need players who can be trusted week after week.
Kounde feels like the kind of signing that would raise the floor of the team. He can defend one v one, play in a high line, handle pressure in possession and move inside when needed. That gives Slot options without creating chaos.
The fee is significant, but Liverpool have already shown they are prepared to spend big when they believe the player fits. After a disappointing title defence, another busy summer feels inevitable. If Kounde is available and interested, Liverpool should be right at the front of the queue.
