Liverpool Face Huge Summer as Steve McManaman Questions Andy Robertson Exit
Liverpool are heading into a defining transfer window, and Steve McManaman has put his finger on one of the more puzzling calls already shaping the club’s summer. After a poor 2025/26 campaign, Arne Slot’s side need additions, clarity and, perhaps most importantly, stability.
That is why the decision to allow Andy Robertson to leave has raised eyebrows. The Scotland captain has given Liverpool nine outstanding years, collecting major honours, setting standards and becoming one of the most influential full-backs of the modern Premier League era. At 32, he may no longer be the relentless force who dominated the left flank during the peak years, yet his experience, intensity and dressing-room authority still carry obvious value.
McManaman Surprised by Robertson Decision
Speaking on ESPN, McManaman made it clear that he sees this as a major summer for Liverpool.
He said: “They’ve got a huge summer ahead, haven’t they?
“We talk about Real Madrid having a huge summer. Liverpool have got a monstrous summer ahead, losing characters like Mo Salah and Andy Robertson particularly.
“I was really surprised to see him leaving.”
That final line tells its own story. Robertson’s departure is not simply about replacing a left-back on a tactics board. It is about losing a senior figure who understands the club, the standards and the pressure of playing at Anfield.
Liverpool already have enough recruitment work to do. Creating another vacancy in defence only adds complexity to a window that was already looking crowded.
Robertson Exit Adds to Liverpool Transfer Burden
Andy Robertson’s Liverpool career has been built on reliability, aggression and leadership. Even when his physical level dipped slightly, his competitive edge remained. In a squad that needs guidance as much as fresh legs, that matters.
Liverpool now need to find a left-back capable of contributing immediately. That player must have athleticism, defensive awareness and the personality to handle expectation. Those profiles are neither cheap nor easy to secure, especially when rivals know Liverpool are entering the market under pressure.
There is also the question of balance. Slot’s first title-winning season in 2024/25 showed what Liverpool can become when structure and conviction align. The collapse that followed in 2025/26 has made this summer feel like a rebuild, yet too much turnover can create fresh uncertainty.

Salah, Alisson and Senior Depth Concerns
McManaman’s wider concern centres on numbers. Mohamed Salah is leaving, Robertson is going, and other senior players have been linked with moves.
McManaman continued: “It looks as if Alisson will stay and I’m glad about that.
“And then there’s even mutterings that Joe Gomez might leave and even Curtis Jones, which I think will be awful because Liverpool don’t need to lose any more bodies.
“If anything, they need to bring in five or six. So massive, massive summer ahead for Liverpool.”
That assessment feels sharp. Liverpool require attacking reinforcement, defensive depth and greater squad resilience. Losing further options would make Richard Hughes’ task even harder.
Huge Summer Ahead for Slot and Hughes
Liverpool cannot afford a muddled window. The club need targeted recruitment, smart retention and a clear sense of which players still have a role.
Steve McManaman’s comments on Andy Robertson reflect a broader worry among supporters. Liverpool need evolution, not unnecessary upheaval. Robertson may have been nearing the end of his peak years, but his exit removes another trusted voice from a squad already facing major change.
For Slot and Hughes, this summer is about more than signings. It is about rebuilding authority, restoring depth and ensuring Liverpool do not weaken themselves before the new season even begins.
