Alonso influence could shape Chelsea recruitment
Chelsea’s summer transfer plans are already generating discussion across European football, with Frimpong and Cucurella emerging as two players whose futures may become closely linked to Alonso’s arrival.
According to reporting from the Standard, former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta believes Chelsea could benefit from reuniting Frimpong with Alonso after the pair enjoyed significant success together at Bayer Leverkusen.
Frimpong played a crucial role during Leverkusen’s historic double-winning campaign under Alonso, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking full-backs. His performances earned a move to Liverpool, but injuries and inconsistency have prevented him from reproducing the same level of influence on Merseyside.
That situation has inevitably led to speculation about his future. While Frimpong remains under contract, the suggestion that Chelsea could provide a fresh start has gained traction because of the strong relationship developed between player and coach in Germany.
Mendieta believes familiarity can often prove decisive when managers begin reshaping squads.
“Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea,” he said.
The former midfielder explained that managers frequently look towards trusted players when beginning a new project, particularly those who already understand their tactical demands and expectations.

Frimpong connection offers tactical advantages
Few players understand Alonso’s methods better than Frimpong.
At Leverkusen, the Dutch international flourished in an aggressive system that demanded constant attacking movement, intelligent positioning and relentless energy. Those qualities helped transform him into one of the Bundesliga’s standout performers.
Mendieta highlighted the importance of that existing relationship, suggesting there would be confidence from both parties if a reunion were to materialise.
“Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again.”
That point is particularly relevant when discussing Frimpong’s recent struggles. Injury disruptions can affect confidence as much as physical sharpness, and a familiar environment often helps players rediscover their best level.
Chelsea already possess quality options in wide defensive areas, including Reece James and Malo Gusto. However, Frimpong’s attacking profile would offer something different, especially in a system that places heavy emphasis on full-back progression and attacking width.
Cucurella remains central to Chelsea plans
While Frimpong’s future remains uncertain, Mendieta was far more confident when discussing Cucurella.
The Spanish defender has reportedly attracted interest from Barcelona, prompting questions about whether he could return to Spain. Yet Mendieta believes Chelsea should view him as a fundamental component of Alonso’s project.
“I think both Barcelona and Real Madrid would suit Marc Cucurella.”
That endorsement reflects Cucurella’s versatility. Across recent seasons he has demonstrated an ability to operate in multiple defensive and midfield roles, combining tactical intelligence with exceptional work rate.
Mendieta pointed specifically to his adaptability.
“He is very intelligent tactically and can adapt to different roles.”
Such qualities are especially valuable within Alonso’s systems, where full-backs are frequently required to contribute both defensively and offensively during the same passage of play.
Demands of Alonso system suit Chelsea defender
One reason Cucurella appears such a natural fit is the physical and tactical intensity associated with Alonso’s football.
At Leverkusen, full-backs were expected to provide attacking thrust while also supporting central areas. It required stamina, positional awareness and technical quality in equal measure.
Mendieta believes those demands align perfectly with Cucurella’s strengths.
“I’m not sure we’ll see him leave this season, especially with Xabi Alonso coming in.”
He added that Alonso would likely place significant trust in the defender, viewing him as a key figure capable of executing the coach’s tactical principles.
“Cucurella will be a key player under Xabi Alonso.”
As Chelsea prepare for another important summer, the futures of Frimpong and Cucurella may ultimately reveal much about Alonso’s long-term vision. One could represent a familiar face capable of accelerating a new project. The other appears ideally suited to become a cornerstone of it.
Either way, Alonso’s influence is already shaping transfer conversations long before the new campaign begins.
