Wirtz, Isak and van Dijk provide encouragement as Liverpool stars shine at World Cup
Liverpool’s new era continues to take shape, and the early signs from the World Cup have offered plenty of encouragement for supporters eager to see how the squad develops under Andoni Iraola.
While transfer speculation continues to dominate headlines, performances on the international stage often provide valuable insight into players returning to club football. According to a BBC Sport report by chief football writer Phil McNulty, several Liverpool players and potential future targets delivered standout displays during an eventful day at the tournament.
For Iraola, who is assessing both his current squad and potential additions, the performances of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Virgil van Dijk were particularly noteworthy.

Wirtz rediscovers confidence on international stage
Few Liverpool players enter the new campaign under greater scrutiny than Wirtz. The Germany international arrived at Anfield amid enormous expectations but struggled to consistently reproduce the form that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after talents.
However, Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curacao offered a reminder of the qualities that persuaded Liverpool to invest heavily in the attacking midfielder.
Operating from the left side, Wirtz looked liberated and influential throughout. He created Germany’s opening goal and regularly found pockets of space to dictate attacks. His movement, vision and quick decision-making were all on display as Germany overwhelmed their opponents.
McNulty observed that Wirtz “showed some golden touches” and appeared far more comfortable than he often did during his debut Liverpool season.
Former England striker Chris Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, was equally impressed.
“He looked happy in a German jersey, at ease and playing with freedom.”
That freedom could be crucial for Liverpool next season. Iraola’s tactical approach may provide Wirtz with a more clearly defined role, allowing him to maximise his creativity and technical quality.
van Dijk remains Liverpool’s defensive leader
At 35 next month, van Dijk continues to demonstrate why he remains one of Liverpool’s most important players.
The Netherlands captain delivered another commanding display during his side’s 2-2 draw against Japan, earning man-of-the-match recognition after producing a performance that combined leadership, defensive authority and attacking threat.
Van Dijk opened the scoring with a well-taken header and repeatedly rescued his side during periods of sustained Japanese pressure. His aerial dominance remained a defining feature of his game, while his organisational qualities helped steady a defence that occasionally looked vulnerable.
McNulty described van Dijk as “the main barrier of resistance” for the Dutch side, underlining the influence he continues to exert at the highest level.
For Liverpool, maintaining that level of performance will be essential. As the club transitions into a new chapter, van Dijk’s experience and consistency provide an invaluable foundation for Iraola to build upon.
Isak delivers reminder of elite quality
Another player who caught the eye was Isak, whose difficult first season at Liverpool was disrupted by injuries and inconsistent form.
The Sweden international looked rejuvenated during his country’s impressive 5-1 victory over Tunisia. His goal may have benefited from a goalkeeping mistake, but his overall performance showcased the pace, intelligence and technical ability that have made him one of Europe’s most highly regarded forwards.
Isak not only found the net but also created a goal for Viktor Gyokeres after forcing an error from Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri. His movement caused constant problems for defenders, while his confidence appeared fully restored.
McNulty noted that Isak was “instrumental” in Sweden’s victory and deservedly claimed the man-of-the-match award.
For Liverpool, that performance could prove particularly significant. Injuries restricted Isak’s impact last season, but a fully fit version of the striker would offer Iraola a formidable attacking weapon heading into the new campaign.
World Cup performances offer hope for Liverpool revival
International tournaments are rarely perfect indicators of what lies ahead at club level, but Liverpool will nevertheless be encouraged by what they witnessed.
Wirtz displayed creativity and confidence, van Dijk reaffirmed his status as a world-class defender, and Isak produced the sort of all-round centre-forward display supporters have been waiting to see regularly at Anfield.
As highlighted in Phil McNulty’s BBC Sport analysis, these performances provided valuable evidence that Liverpool possess the foundations for significant improvement.
The challenge for Iraola now is to translate those encouraging individual displays into collective success when domestic football resumes. If Wirtz, Isak and van Dijk can carry their World Cup form back to Merseyside, Liverpool may once again emerge as genuine contenders on multiple fronts.
