Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool Future Under Spotlight as Exit Reports Grow

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is expected to focus on arrivals, but during Media Matters on Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele also discussed a name that continues to appear in transfer speculation, Cody Gakpo.

While there is no indication that Gakpo has formally pushed for a move away from Anfield, the conversation highlighted why questions are being asked about his future and whether Liverpool could consider a sale if the right offer arrived.

Gakpo Reports Continue to Surface

The discussion began with Davis referencing growing reports linking Gakpo with a potential departure.

As Davis explained, David Lynch had recently suggested that the Dutch international had not approached Liverpool seeking an exit. However, he also noted that Gakpo had been described as “not untouchable” during the current transfer window.

That distinction is important.

Liverpool are not actively looking to move the forward on, but equally they may be willing to listen if a significant offer is presented.

Davis pointed to reports suggesting figures in the region of £70 million have been mentioned, creating an intriguing debate around Liverpool’s transfer strategy.

Bayern Interest Adds Context

Steele revealed that Gakpo’s name has appeared on the radar of major European clubs before.

“I know that Bayern had a look at Gakpo last summer before they did Diaz.”

That interest never developed into a transfer, with Liverpool instead extending Gakpo’s contract several months ago. Nevertheless, the fact that elite clubs have monitored his situation demonstrates that there would likely be a market for the player if circumstances changed.

Difficult Season Raises Questions

Steele was honest when assessing Gakpo’s recent campaign.

“He did have a terrible season. I don’t think there’s any sugar coat in that.”

While he also acknowledged that the Dutchman performed well in his latest international appearance, the broader assessment reflected a season in which Liverpool’s attack struggled for consistency.

That naturally creates questions over whether Liverpool could look to reshape their forward line under Andoni Iraola.

Steele suggested that if Liverpool are seeking funds to support a wider squad rebuild, Gakpo could emerge as one of the more valuable assets available.

“Maybe he is one of them that they cash in on in a similar vein to how they cashed in on Diaz last summer.”

Liverpool Must Balance Finances and Squad Depth

Despite recognising the possibility of a sale, Steele also highlighted why Liverpool may be reluctant to sanction Gakpo’s departure.

“I think that would leave them very light in terms of the numbers in attack.”

That concern was a recurring theme throughout the wider discussion. Liverpool are already assessing major attacking additions this summer, with Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola among the names being linked.

Removing an established forward before replacements are secured would create another challenge for a squad already undergoing significant change.

For that reason, Steele’s conclusion was measured.

“I don’t really think it makes sense to get rid of him unless a really good offer is on the table.”

That may ultimately define Liverpool’s position. Gakpo is not being actively pushed towards the exit door, but if a substantial bid arrives and Liverpool believe it helps fund a broader rebuild, the conversation could become far more serious as the summer progresses.
