Alan Shearer Believes Liverpool Move Is Only a Matter of Time
Liverpool are entering one of the most important summers in recent memory. Years of stability have given way to a period of rebuilding and there is no escaping the scale of the task facing Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola.
Replacing an icon is never straightforward. Replacing someone who defined an era is even harder.
With Mohamed Salah departing at the end of the 2025/26 season, Liverpool have a glaring vacancy on the right side of attack and Alan Shearer believes the solution will arrive sooner rather than later.

The message is simple. It is only a matter of time.
Alan Shearer Identifies Liverpool’s Priority
Liverpool supporters have become accustomed to seeing elite quality on the right flank. For almost a decade, Salah delivered goals, assists and moments that shaped title races.
That responsibility now falls elsewhere.
Speaking via the Liverpool Echo, Alan Shearer said: “Liverpool need several players, I think, if they want to compete again at the very top, and certainly in wide positions they’re going to have to strengthen.

“I’m not surprised with who they’re being linked with like Diomande and Barcola. I guess it’s only a matter of time before that would be the position that they announce.”
It is difficult to argue with that assessment.
Liverpool can address other areas later in the window, but finding a new right winger has to be the priority.
Right Wing Demands Immediate Attention
Federico Chiesa remains the only natural senior option available in that position.

Liverpool supporters appreciate his professionalism and quality, but opportunities have been limited and expecting him to replicate Salah’s extraordinary influence would be unfair.
Recruitment now becomes essential rather than optional.
Yan Diomande continues to attract attention and there is understandable excitement surrounding his development.

Bradley Barcola also fits the profile of a player capable of becoming a long term fixture in Liverpool’s front line.

The key requirement is reliability. Liverpool need someone capable of handling expectation immediately while still offering room for growth.
Rebuild Extends Beyond One Position
A new winger will not solve every issue.
Liverpool’s difficult 2025/26 campaign exposed weaknesses throughout the squad. Iraola will almost certainly want reinforcements in several departments before the season begins.
A versatile defender who can operate across the entire back line would provide much needed security.
A dominant number six would also transform Liverpool’s midfield balance. Allowing Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister to operate further forward would increase creativity and inject more energy into attacking phases.
Every successful Liverpool side has been built on strong foundations.
Matter of Time Before Liverpool Act
Football supporters often hear the phrase that a transfer window is pivotal.
Sometimes it is exaggerated. This time it feels accurate.
Several high profile departures have altered the landscape and Liverpool cannot afford hesitation.
Alan Shearer’s observation carries weight because the answer feels obvious. Liverpool need a statement signing on the right wing and everything points towards movement arriving sooner rather than later.
For a club with ambitions of returning to the summit, it is only a matter of time before decisive action arrives.
