Feyenoord Bring Giovanni van Bronckhorst Back to Rotterdam

Feyenoord have moved decisively after the end of the Robin van Persie era, confirming Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new head coach.

It is a return loaded with logic, emotion and expectation. For Feyenoord, Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not simply a familiar name. He is a former player, a title-winning manager and someone who understands the particular rhythm of De Kuip.

Van Persie Exit Forces Feyenoord Reset

Robin van Persie’s first full season brought Feyenoord a second-place Eredivisie finish and Champions League qualification. On paper, that is hardly a disaster.

Yet football clubs rarely make decisions on league position alone. Feyenoord finished 19 points behind PSV Eindhoven, and that gap told its own story. There were extended dips in form, questions over consistency and criticism around Van Persie’s man-management.

After an internal review, Feyenoord chose to remove the 42-year-old despite one year remaining on his contract.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst Returns With Proven Pedigree

Van Bronckhorst’s first spell as Feyenoord manager remains one of the modern club’s great success stories. Between 2015 and 2019, he delivered the Eredivisie title in 2016-17, ending a long wait for league glory.

He also won the KNVB Cup in 2016 and 2018, plus the Johan Cruijff Shield in 2017 and 2018. That matters because Feyenoord are not appointing on nostalgia alone. They are appointing a coach who has already shown he can win there.

A Feyenoord statement read:

“Feyenoord has reached an agreement with Giovanni van Bronckhorst on his appointment as head coach of the first team. The 51-year-old Rotterdam native has signed a two-year contract, with an option for the club to extend it by a further year.”

Hulshoff Arrival Adds Tactical Continuity

Former Arne Slot assistant Sipke Hulshoff has also returned to Feyenoord, joining Van Bronckhorst’s staff after leaving Liverpool following Slot’s exit.

That detail is significant. Hulshoff knows Feyenoord’s academy, understands the club’s structure and worked closely with Slot during his time at De Kuip. His two-year deal, also with a one-year option, gives Feyenoord a coaching team with local knowledge and recent Premier League experience.

Feyenoord Technical Director Dévy Rigaux said of the appointment: “The return of Giovanni van Bronckhorst marks a new chapter for Feyenoord.”

“We want to continue building on our sporting ambitions with a head coach who combines extensive international experience with a deep understanding of the club’s culture.”

“I have followed Giovanni’s career with great interest for many years. He is an outstanding coach and a strong personality. His broad experience, combined with his Feyenoord DNA and the hunger for new success that Robert Eenhoorn and I sensed during our conversations with him, give us great confidence that he can help take the club forward once again.”

He added on Hulshoff: “The partnership between Van Bronckhorst and Hulshoff, which was further developed and strengthened in England, provides Feyenoord with a complementary coaching duo that combines international experience, a winning mentality and in-depth knowledge of the club. We are therefore delighted to welcome them both back to Rotterdam.”

Rotterdam Return Carries Real Pressure

For Van Bronckhorst, this is both homecoming and test. Feyenoord supporters know what he achieved before, but they will also expect a side capable of pushing PSV harder and competing properly in Europe.

That is the gamble and the opportunity. Feyenoord have gone back to a man who understands the club, but the job ahead is firmly about the future.
