Liverpool Eyeing Victor Froholdt as Midfield Planning Takes Shape
Liverpool’s summer rebuild under Andoni Iraola could yet stretch into midfield, with TeamTalk reporting that the club are monitoring Porto’s Victor Froholdt as part of a wider recruitment push.
The 20-year-old Denmark international only joined Porto from Copenhagen last summer, but his progress has already placed him on the radar of several Premier League clubs. With Liverpool assessing possible midfield changes, Froholdt’s name is one to watch.
Froholdt Interest Gathers Pace
According to TeamTalk, Liverpool are not alone in tracking Froholdt.
“Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Brighton and Newcastle United are among the clubs closely monitoring the 20-year-old’s development,” the report reads.
That level of interest tells its own story. Froholdt is not being viewed as a speculative punt. He is already seen as a midfielder with the profile, age and trajectory to interest elite recruitment departments.
Porto are protected by a £70m release clause, meaning any deal would be complex. Yet Liverpool’s interest makes sense, particularly if Alexis Mac Allister or Curtis Jones become part of the summer conversation.
Midfield Decisions Loom for Liverpool
Mac Allister is under contract until 2028, but TeamTalk states that no negotiations currently exist over a new deal. Jones, meanwhile, is out of contract in 2027, with Inter Milan reportedly interested in a deal worth around £26m.
That puts Liverpool in a familiar position. They do not necessarily need to sell, but they must plan ahead. Under Iraola, the midfield may require different physical and tactical qualities, particularly if Liverpool want more intensity, control and vertical thrust.
Froholdt would fit the idea of buying early, before a player reaches full market maturity. Liverpool have been at their best when moving before the price becomes impossible.
Caleb Yirenkyi Adds Further Intrigue
The report also highlights Liverpool’s interest in Caleb Yirenkyi, the FC Nordsjælland midfielder who is impressing for Ghana at the World Cup.
“Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle are all understood to be aware of the Ghanaian’s progress, highlighting just how highly regarded both players have become among Europe’s leading recruitment departments,” the report reads.
Porto reportedly see Yirenkyi as a potential replacement for Froholdt, yet Liverpool are also in the mix for the Ghanaian. That creates an interesting recruitment triangle, with the Reds potentially looking at both the player Porto have and the one they may want next.
Hughes Could Move Aggressively Again
Richard Hughes has already shown a willingness to act boldly in the market. TeamTalk notes that he signed Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike last summer when Liverpool needed centre-forward depth.
Now, midfield could be the next department for major attention. Froholdt would not be cheap, and Yirenkyi will have competition too. But Liverpool’s interest suggests a broader strategy rather than a single-player chase.
For Iraola, the priority will be building a squad with energy, reliability and tactical flexibility. Froholdt looks like the kind of young midfielder who could grow into that plan.

From a Liverpool perspective, this is exactly the type of report that feels worth paying attention to. Froholdt may not be the biggest name in European football yet, but that is often the point. Liverpool cannot keep waiting until every target becomes a £100m auction.
The £70m release clause feels steep, especially for a 20-year-old who only moved to Porto last summer. But release clauses are often starting points, not final prices. If Liverpool genuinely believe Froholdt can become an elite midfielder, then this may be the stage at which they need to act.
The bigger issue is what this says about the current midfield. Mac Allister’s contract situation needs clarity. Jones entering the final two years of his deal also creates uncertainty. Supporters will not want another summer where Liverpool react late.
Yirenkyi being mentioned too makes the story even more interesting. If Liverpool are tracking both Froholdt and Porto’s potential replacement, that suggests the scouting department is looking closely at a very specific midfield profile.
