Liverpool Dealt Blow in Pursuit of New Right-Back After Fabrizio Romano Update

We’re just six weeks away from Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Newcastle United, and a lot still needs to be done.

Two signings have already been wrapped up. Jeremy Jacquet has arrived from Rennes in a £60m deal, whilst Liverpool triggered the £34.5m release clause to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna.

However, there’s a number of key decisions still to be made. Liverpool are pushing hard to sign another forward and another defender is also expected after the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid.

More specifically, a new right-back has been spoke about a lot. It was a major weakness in Liverpool’s side last season. Jeremie Frimpong struggled to adapt after his move from Bayer Leverkusen. Conor Bradley suffered a season-ending injury in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal in January. That meant that midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were used often at right-back.

One of the names Liverpool have been heavily linked to has been Brentford’s Michael Kayode. The 21-year-old was a standout performer last season, where the Bees just missed out on European football.

However, any move for the Italian looks to be off after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update…

Kayode Signs New Brentford Contract

Speaking on X, Romano confirmed that the defender has signed a new six-year deal at Brentford.

He said: “EXCL: Brentford agree new deal for Michael Kayode valid until 2032!”

“All sealed as Brentford make huge, smart move to keep one of the most wanted RBs around.”

“21 year old Italian talent did excellent last season + big part of Brentford plans, club sources confirm.”

Who Could Liverpool Move For?

Liverpool will already have a long list of potential targets. We exclusively revealed that the club had held initial talks with Rayo Vallecano right-back Andrei Ratiu.

Another Italian defender in Marco Palestra was linked, but the 21-year-old has since secured a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Guela Doue of Strasbourg has also been mentioned after a string of very impressive performances for Ivory Coast at the World Cup. However, there’s yet to be any concrete reports on this one.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has also been linked, but Liverpool have not yet acted on their interest despite the Frenchman being available this summer.

As it stands, Liverpool will be heading into the new season without a natural right-back.

Jeremie Frimpong remains the closest thing to a right-back, but is closer to a winger than a full-back. Joe Gomez could be utilised there but can’t be trusted with his injury record.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool approach the right-back situation, but it is a glaring weakness in Andoni Iraola’s squad.
