Liverpool FC Women reset gathers pace as Gemma Evans departs for Newcastle
Liverpool FC Women are trimming the squad with purpose, and Gemma Evans’ move to Newcastle United Women feels like another clear marker in a summer of change. After a season spent looking anxiously over their shoulder in the Women’s Super League, there was always going to be movement. Plenty of it.
The warning signs were there for months. Liverpool hovered too close to danger and only found enough breathing space late on. For a club of this size, that sort of campaign leaves a sour taste. It demands action, and the recruitment drive suggests they know it.
As Newcastle United confirmed, Evans has now made her switch official. She leaves after two seasons at Liverpool and 39 appearances, taking with her experience, resilience and a strong grounding in the top flight. At 29, with 85 Wales caps and a place in their historic Euro 2025 squad, she departs with a decent body of work behind her.
Liverpool women lean into younger profile
This is not a random bit of churn. Liverpool have already added Sara Agrež, Vivien Endemann and Mari Ward, and the pattern is obvious enough. Younger legs, fresh energy, and a squad being reshaped with the future in mind. That does not make every exit painless, but it does make them understandable.
Evans goes to a club with ambition and familiarity around her. On the move, she said: “I’m happy this move is finally over the line. I’m over the moon, I’m looking forward to meeting the girls, meeting the fans and showing them what I can do.
“I think it’s a really exciting project to be part of and I can’t wait to get going.”
Gemma Evans brings WSL experience to Newcastle women
That word, project, crops up a lot in football. Sometimes it is fluff. Sometimes it means something. Newcastle look serious, and Tanya Oxtoby made it plain why Evans matters to them: “Gemma joins us with great experience both at club level and internationally with Wales. She is someone that I have worked with previously, so I know what she offers us on the pitch with her fight and determination, as well as her defensive attributes.
“She understands what it takes to play in the WSL, and that is where we want to be. I am looking forward to working with Gemma again.”
For Liverpool, this is another step in a necessary rebuild. For Evans, it is a fresh start with a club heading upwards. Sometimes football moves on quickly. This feels like one of those moments.
