Bradley Barcola to Liverpool looks difficult as PSG hold firm on £145m valuation

Liverpool have made contact over Bradley Barcola, but early indications suggest any move for the Paris Saint-Germain winger will be tough to advance unless the French club soften their position. According to Sky Sports, the Premier League club have held preliminary talks with PSG and also spoken to the player’s representatives, yet the current asking price is a major obstacle.

The central issue is clear. There is, in Sky Sports’ words, “a significant gap in valuation between the two clubs”. PSG are said to value the 23-year-old at “£145m”, and “PSG’s stance on the fee makes it a difficult deal to complete at this stage.” That framing matters. Liverpool’s interest is genuine, but the conditions for a deal are presently unfavourable.

Barcola transfer talks reveal Liverpool interest

Barcola has been admired at Anfield for some time and his profile fits the current recruitment theme. Liverpool’s new head coach Andoni Iraola wants speed, intensity and directness in wide areas, particularly after the departure of Mohamed Salah. In that context, it is no surprise that Barcola remains under consideration.

The report adds that “a move to Anfield is said to appeal to Barcola”, which is a relevant detail even if it does not materially change the negotiating picture. The France international has “two years left on his PSG contract and has indicated he will not be signing a new one amid frustrations at a lack of game time.” For Liverpool, that could eventually become a point of leverage, though not necessarily in the immediate term.

There is also a wider squad-building angle. Liverpool “are planning to have five wingers at the end of the window, with an additional one being a younger player they want to develop.” That helps explain why the club are examining more than one route in the market rather than placing all focus on a single target.

Ibrahim Mbaye option remains separate

One of those routes is Ibrahim Mbaye. Liverpool have explored the conditions of a deal for the PSG teenager, with the 18-year-old believed to be keen on a switch. Crucially, “Their interest in the teenager is completely independent of any potential move for Barcola,” which suggests the recruitment team are working on parallel tracks.

That distinction is important. Mbaye would represent a developmental addition, whereas Barcola would be a premium, ready-made signing. The current plan appears flexible enough that “It is possible that Liverpool could sign Mbaye and another more experienced option.” In other words, Liverpool’s search for a winger is broader than one headline name.

PSG stance keeps Anfield move at arm’s length

There may have been some outside expectation that PSG’s own business could alter the picture. The arrival of Magnes Akliouche from Monaco for “£42.8m” and advanced talks for Ajax winger Mika Godts might have been interpreted as a prelude to an exit. Yet that does not appear to be the case.

The reporting is explicit that “PSG would ideally like to keep” Barcola. It also states that “PSG signing Godts and Akliouche does not increase the likelihood of Barcola leaving.” That is a firm message from the French champions, who have already allowed several forwards to depart this summer.

For now, Liverpool’s interest can be described as active but complicated. Barcola appeals, the player is open to the idea, and the tactical fit is obvious. Yet unless PSG revisit the fee, this is one to monitor rather than one nearing completion.

Barcola has the tools to be a brilliant fit for Iraola. He is quick, aggressive, technically sharp and comfortable carrying the ball in transition. You can see why Liverpool have kept him on their radar for years.

The biggest issue is obvious, £145m is enormous, even for a player of his quality and age. Liverpool should not walk blindly into that number. If PSG really “would ideally like to keep” him, then the price is probably designed to shut the door rather than invite a negotiation. That means Liverpool may need to wait, keep the dialogue open and see whether the contract situation changes the mood later in the window or beyond.

There is encouragement in the fact that “a move to Anfield is said to appeal to Barcola”. That matters. Players who want Liverpool can sometimes help shift a deal over time. Supporters will also like that the club seem to be thinking on two levels, an elite winger now, plus a younger one to develop.

If Barcola proves impossible, fans should still take confidence from the strategy. Liverpool know they need more from the wide areas and they are targeting high-level profiles. Barcola would be exciting, but the bigger positive is that the club appear clear about the type of attacker Iraola wants.
