Liverpool are moving towards completing the loan signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, with the Uruguay international expected in the UK on Sunday for his medical.

According to Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O’Connor, the agreement is now progressing towards its final stages, with Liverpool poised to strengthen Andoni Iraola’s defensive options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Sky Sports report: “Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is set to arrive in the UK on Sunday to complete his loan move to Liverpool.”

For Liverpool, the attraction is understandable. Injuries have left Iraola short of reliable options across his back line, and Araujo offers experience in two positions where reinforcements are required.

O’Connor reports that Araujo will undergo his Liverpool medical immediately after arriving in the country.

“The Uruguay international is scheduled to take a medical on the day he lands.”

Assuming there are no unexpected complications, Liverpool will then be in a position to complete the formalities surrounding the move.

Araujo has spent several years competing at the highest level with Barcelona and brings considerable experience at both domestic and European level. At 27, he should theoretically be entering the prime years of his career.

Liverpool will hope that experience allows him to adapt quickly to Iraola’s demands.

Liverpool Secure Option to Buy

One particularly significant aspect of the agreement concerns the structure of the transfer.

There is plenty about this deal that makes me nervous from a Liverpool perspective.

Araujo’s quality has never really been the question. When fully fit and playing regularly, he has the physical attributes to operate at the highest level. He is powerful, aggressive, quick across the ground and capable of defending large spaces.

Fitness is precisely why Liverpool supporters should approach this deal cautiously.

Liverpool desperately need reliability at centre-back. Ibrahima Konate has departed, leaving Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet among Iraola’s primary options, while injuries elsewhere have already created defensive uncertainty.

Bringing in another defender with a concerning injury history feels like a gamble when availability should be near the top of Liverpool’s recruitment criteria.

The loan structure provides some reassurance. Liverpool are not immediately handing Barcelona £47.14m, and having an option rather than an obligation gives the club a full season to assess Araujo physically and tactically.

That is important.

Liverpool simply cannot afford for him to become another defender watching crucial matches from the treatment room.
