Liverpool Transfer News: Striker Need Remains Amid Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye Talks

Liverpool’s summer planning continues to gather pace, with Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye firmly in the frame, but movement for two wide attackers may not settle every issue in Andoni Iraola’s squad.

There is ongoing work behind the scenes on both Paris Saint-Germain players, and Liverpool are understood to be pushing to find a breakthrough. Barcola is viewed as the more complicated pursuit at present, largely because PSG’s valuation remains extremely high. Even so, there is a belief on Merseyside that the asking price could soften as the window develops.

If Liverpool were to land both Barcola and Mbaye, attention would quickly shift to whether the attacking unit is truly complete. The view from within the wider game is that the answer may be no, particularly given the current uncertainty around Hugo Ekitike’s recovery and the broader make-up of the forward line.

Striker question still hangs over Liverpool

The key issue is cover through the middle. Alexander Isak is now Liverpool’s leading No.9 option, but depth behind him looks light while Ekitike remains sidelined. Cody Gakpo’s situation adds another layer, with the possibility of his departure leaving Iraola with fewer natural solutions centrally.

There are internal alternatives. Federico Chiesa could be adapted, while Dominik Szoboszlai or Curtis Jones might be used in a false nine role depending on the opposition and tactical demand. Yet that feels more like contingency than a long-term answer.

As a result, Liverpool may still explore the market for a short-term striker option. A loan would make sense, especially if resources are heavily committed elsewhere. The club have already shown a willingness to use that route in other areas, and it may prove the most realistic path if the bulk of the budget goes on elite attacking recruits.

Bradley Barcola pursuit remains expensive

Barcola is admired for his pace, directness and capacity to stretch defences, qualities that fit naturally with Iraola’s aggressive attacking ideas. Mbaye is also highly regarded, and Liverpool see value in trying to conclude both deals together if terms can be agreed.

The overall outlay being discussed is significant. A package of around £155 million for Barcola and Mbaye has been suggested, although Barcola alone may still require a fee beyond the current British transfer record if PSG hold their position for much longer.

That said, Liverpool have been encouraged by the fact neither player is currently being used by Luis Enrique while their futures remain unresolved. From Liverpool’s perspective, that offers a window for negotiation and a chance to push talks forward.

Midfield rebuild may follow attacking business

Beyond the frontline, midfield is another department under consideration. Iraola’s style places different demands on his players to those seen under Arne Slot, and Liverpool may yet decide that further athleticism, intensity and tactical flexibility are needed there too.

For now, the priority appears clear. Liverpool want Barcola, Liverpool want Mbaye, and Liverpool may still need a striker before the window closes. Even if major attacking deals are completed, the final shape of this squad could still depend on one more move.
