Newcastle 2–2 Liverpool: Man of the Match

Víctor Muñoz

Sometimes a Man of the Match award is about celebrating an outstanding individual performance.

Sometimes it is about recognising the one player who provided the spark that almost everyone else around him lacked.

At St James’ Park, Víctor Muñoz falls into the second category.

The young Spanish winger entered the match late and immediately changed the dynamic of Liverpool’s attack. While the Reds had struggled for long periods to create genuine danger, Muñoz brought directness, pace and an explosive willingness to attack his opponent.

It was exactly what Liverpool had been missing.

The winger did not spend his time looking for the safe option. He received the ball and drove forward, forcing Newcastle to retreat and creating uncertainty whenever he attacked the flank.

That is the profile Liverpool need more of.

Andoni Iraola’s football should be built around relentless attacking intent, rapid transitions and players prepared to run beyond opponents rather than continually recycling possession.

Muñoz demonstrated those qualities immediately.

His biggest contribution arrived deep into stoppage time.

With Liverpool desperately searching for an equaliser, the youngster collected possession and drove into the penalty area with purpose. His direct running forced the Newcastle defence into a desperate challenge and Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the 95th minute.

Dominik Szoboszlai converted.

Liverpool escaped with a point.

It was not a convincing performance by any means, but Muñoz had provided the moment that changed the outcome.

A Bright Future, But Liverpool Have Serious Problems to Solve

It is difficult to describe Liverpool’s overall performance as anything other than disappointing.

The lack of a genuine defensive midfielder was painfully obvious throughout the match. Liverpool repeatedly looked vulnerable whenever Newcastle transitioned quickly, while the decision to operate with two full-backs who are naturally more attacking than defensive only increased the exposure.

That combination is a recipe for problems.

Liverpool need a specialist defensive midfielder.

They need a defensively reliable right-back.

They also need another genuine attacking option on the left.

Cody Gakpo produced one of the few explosive moments of the evening with his excellent long-range finish, but aside from that strike, his influence was limited.

Rio Ngumoha showed flashes of his talent but struggled to impose himself consistently, whereas Muñoz immediately provided the directness and aggression Liverpool desperately needed.

That could have consequences for the next team selection.

I would expect Muñoz to push strongly for a starting role in the next Premier League fixture, and based on what he produced at Newcastle, it would not surprise me if he moved ahead of Rio for the next outing.

The Spaniard was the best of a disappointing bunch.

That should not be interpreted as criticism of the youngster. Quite the opposite.

His performance was one of the few genuine positives Liverpool could take from an otherwise concerning afternoon.

The Reds escaped with a point when three would have been expected.

There is much work for Iraola to do.

But in Víctor Muñoz, Liverpool may have discovered another exciting weapon.
