Liverpool Interest in Ismaila Sarr Would ‘Spell Panic Buy’ as Deadline Looms

Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr has become one of the more intriguing stories of the closing stages of the transfer window, and David Lynch believes the finances involved would make any deal difficult to reconcile with the club’s traditional recruitment model.

Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch confirmed that Sarr is among the attacking options Liverpool are considering as they attempt to complete their squad with the deadline approaching.

The issue, in Lynch’s view, concerns the price Liverpool may have to pay for a player who is approaching his 29th birthday.

Sarr Quality Not in Question

Lynch was keen to separate his assessment of Ismaila Sarr from his concerns about Liverpool potentially spending heavily to sign him from Crystal Palace.

“At the numbers mentioned, I’m absolutely stunned,” Lynch told Davis.

“I think he’s a very good player, by the way. Obviously, I cover Liverpool, so every time he plays against Liverpool, he looks like the best player in the world.”

There was plenty of praise for Sarr’s qualities too.

“He’s a finisher. Absolutely. Gets in positions to finish as well an awful lot. I think there’s quite a lot to like about him as a player.”

Lynch added: “He is a good player. Absolutely he is.”

His concern comes from Liverpool reportedly considering the sort of financial commitment they have historically avoided for players of Sarr’s age.

Liverpool Deal Feels Out of Character

Lynch described the potential transaction as “just the least Liverpool deal I can imagine really”, pointing towards the age and fees involved.

“Liverpool generally do business in a certain way that you can hang your hat on and they don’t sign 28, nearly 29 year olds for £50/60 million.”

He stressed again that he did not regard Sarr as “a poor solution”, and suggested the Crystal Palace forward could make sense as a cheaper, short term addition in different circumstances.

At the reported figures, however, Lynch’s verdict was emphatic.

“It would just spell panic buy to me,” he said.

He continued: “They would never sign someone of that age for that kind of fee, they just wouldn’t. It’s not Liverpool at all under FSG. So, you would very easily, I think, be able to deduce that that would be a panic buy.”

Deadline Pressure Raises Liverpool Questions

With the transfer window almost closed, that description carries considerably more weight.

Lynch confirmed that Liverpool’s interest is genuine, although he stopped short of suggesting a transfer was certain.

“I know for a fact personally, speaking to people, he’s definitely one of the options being assessed.”

However, if Sarr goes from an option on Liverpool’s list to the player they ultimately sign, Lynch believes it would raise uncomfortable questions about the recruitment process.

“For him to go from option to being the one that they go for, I’ll be just really surprised. I think it would say something about where Liverpool’s recruitment is up to at the moment, to be honest.”

Again, the criticism was aimed at the circumstances rather than Sarr.

“I really do think he’s good,” Lynch said. “But if the fee is at that end of things, that is just not Liverpool.”

His conclusion was even stronger: “It says to me that something’s gone wrong in this window quite badly.”

Crystal Palace Price Creates Major Risk

Lynch also questioned the long term logic of committing such a fee to Sarr, describing the potential deal as “an incredibly risky move”.

He explained that a younger signing would offer Liverpool greater potential resale value, whereas Sarr’s age changes the calculation considerably.

“This would be zero resale value and a potential of kind of hitting the wall, of falling away a little bit very, very soon.”

Lynch nevertheless reiterated that Sarr is firmly under consideration.

“He’s without question, I know for a fact personally, he’s on the list and he’s someone they’re looking at.”

For Liverpool, the final hours of the window therefore present a fascinating decision. Lynch’s position is clear. Ismaila Sarr can play, can score and could contribute. Paying the reported price to Crystal Palace, with time running out, would tell a very different story.

As Lynch put it, such a move would be “so out of character. So out of character.”
