Liverpool Confirm Djylian N’Guessan Signing as Long Term Plan Takes Shape

Liverpool have officially confirmed an agreement to sign highly rated French forward Djylian N’Guessan from Saint-Etienne, with the 18 year old set to become a permanent Reds player in January.

The deal offers another glimpse into Liverpool’s long term recruitment strategy under Andoni Iraola, identifying emerging talent early and creating a development pathway before asking a young player to make the considerable leap to Anfield.

N’Guessan Deal Gives Liverpool Time to Develop Talent

N’Guessan will not immediately join Liverpool’s first team. Instead, he will spend the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign on loan at Stade Brestois, continuing his development in Ligue 1.

Saint-Etienne confirmed on September 3 that N’Guessan had joined Brest after extending his existing contract until 2028. Crucially, the loan agreement contains no option to buy.

Liverpool subsequently confirmed that an agreement had been reached for the forward to join them permanently in January, while his season long spell with Brest will continue.

It is a carefully constructed arrangement. Liverpool secure the player now, while N’Guessan retains the opportunity to accumulate senior minutes in France rather than moving immediately into the considerably more demanding environment of the Premier League.

French Forward Has Already Made Senior Progress

N’Guessan has been part of Saint-Etienne’s system since 2015, progressing through the football school, pre academy and academy before eventually reaching the senior side.

His professional debut arrived in January 2025 and he has since made 13 first team appearances, scoring once.

Those numbers remain modest, although they tell only part of the story. Liverpool’s interest appears rooted as much in trajectory as production, particularly given N’Guessan’s performances at international youth level.

For France Under-17s, he scored an outstanding 11 goals in 11 appearances. Four of those came during the 2025 European Under-17 Championship, when France reached the final before losing 3-0 to Portugal.

N’Guessan was subsequently selected in the Team of the Tournament.

International Record Highlights N’Guessan Potential

The forward later stepped up to France Under-20 level and was selected for the 2025 Under-20 World Cup.

He appeared seven times as France finished fourth, another significant tournament experience for a player still in the formative stages of his professional career.

Liverpool are effectively investing in what N’Guessan might become rather than what he already is. There is considerable uncertainty attached to every teenage signing, particularly with attackers whose physical and tactical development can change rapidly.

Yet the pathway Liverpool have chosen reduces some of that pressure.

N’Guessan can continue playing senior football in familiar surroundings with Brest before his Liverpool career begins in earnest.

For now, Anfield remains part of his future rather than his immediate surroundings. Liverpool appear comfortable allowing patience to become part of the investment.
