Liverpool Face Major Sporting Director Decision After Richard Hughes Exit

Richard Hughes’ departure from Liverpool had been anticipated for long enough that the announcement itself carried little surprise. What happens next is considerably more interesting.

As reported by Gregg Evans of The Athletic, Hughes has left his position as Liverpool sporting director and is expected to join Al Hilal. His final act was overseeing another significant summer transfer window, leaving Fenway Sports Group with an important decision over who inherits responsibility for shaping the next phase of Liverpool’s rebuild.

There are already three obvious candidates, all of them familiar faces.

Liverpool Consider Internal Richard Hughes Replacements

Evans reports: “Liverpool are expected to look at internal candidates to replace Hughes, but are not ruling out a new appointment.”

He adds: “FSG’s technical director, Julian Ward, who served as Liverpool’s sporting director in 2022-23, is likely to be considered alongside the current assistant sporting director, David Woodfine, and FSG’s director of football development Pedro Marques, all of whom continue to work at the club.”

That paragraph may prove more significant than the announcement of Hughes’ departure.

Mike Gordon will lead the search, and Liverpool’s preference for continuity makes the internal options particularly intriguing.

Ward represents the most recognisable candidate. He succeeded Michael Edwards as sporting director before leaving the role in 2023 and eventually returning to the FSG structure. His knowledge of Liverpool’s recruitment operation, ownership and football strategy would make his appointment straightforward from an organisational perspective.

Woodfine offers another route. As assistant sporting director, he has already been working close to the decisions that have shaped the current squad. Promoting him would retain institutional knowledge while allowing Liverpool to move forward without another major restructuring.

Marques is perhaps the less familiar name to supporters, although his position as FSG’s director of football development makes him another credible possibility.

FSG Decision Arrives At Crucial Moment

Whoever replaces Hughes inherits a very different Liverpool from the one he encountered in 2024.

Hughes was originally appointed following Jürgen Klopp’s decision to leave. Arne Slot arrived under his watch and delivered the Premier League title in his first season before a dramatic decline resulted in his dismissal in May 2026.

Andoni Iraola now occupies the dugout, himself recommended by Hughes after their previous relationship at Bournemouth.

Liverpool have also spent heavily reshaping the playing squad. Around £700 million was committed to incoming players during Hughes’ tenure, with approximately £250m recovered through departures. Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni represent the younger core assembled during that period.

The next sporting director therefore inherits a project already in motion.

Hughes Leaves Behind Expensive Liverpool Project

Hughes’ record will inevitably generate debate. Liverpool won a league title during his tenure and recruited some exceptionally gifted footballers. They have also spent extraordinary sums and still entered this season with questions surrounding the balance and depth of Iraola’s squad.

His farewell was warm.

“First and foremost, I would like to reiterate what I said upon my arrival. It has been a source of great pride to have been given the opportunity to serve this incredible and unique institution. That is something I will always be grateful for.

“My appreciation extends to ownership for their support and leadership, to club staff at all levels who give so much to make Liverpool FC what it is, to the players who make such an enormous contribution and to the fans who support the team in great numbers whenever and wherever games take place.

His anticipated move to Al Hilal closes a relatively short but remarkably eventful period at Anfield.

Liverpool’s attention must now turn towards his successor.

Ward would bring experience, Woodfine continuity and Marques a broader FSG perspective. An external appointment could provide something different entirely.

Liverpool have spent heavily building this squad. Choosing the person entrusted with finishing it could prove every bit as important as choosing the players themselves.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, the list of potential replacements is fascinating because each appointment would tell us something about how FSG views the current football operation.

Julian Ward would immediately attract attention. He knows Liverpool, understands the recruitment structure and has already occupied the sporting director’s chair. There would be virtually no settling-in period. Given Iraola has only recently arrived and the squad has undergone enormous change, that familiarity could be valuable.

David Woodfine might be the most natural continuity appointment. If FSG believes the broader recruitment strategy remains sound, promoting the current assistant sporting director would make considerable sense.

Pedro Marques feels like the wildcard of the three. His wider FSG responsibilities could potentially bring a different perspective, particularly as Liverpool increasingly operate within a broader football structure.

Yet there is also an argument for looking outside.

Spending around £700m across Hughes’ tenure means Liverpool should scrutinise every element of their football operation. The squad contains huge talent, especially Isak, Wirtz and Barcola, but there remain areas requiring attention. The next sporting director will have to assess those weaknesses without being emotionally attached to previous decisions.

That makes Mike Gordon’s search extremely important.

Liverpool do not need somebody who simply continues what came before. They need someone capable of deciding which parts of the existing strategy deserve preserving, which require refinement and where Iraola needs further support.

Hughes has left. The more intriguing story is now who FSG trusts with the keys.
