Chequered pattern could transform familiar Liverpool red
According to the original report from This Is Anfield, early information about the New Liverpool Home Kit points towards a red shirt featuring a darker tonal pattern.
The details originated with Footy Headlines, which published a speculative rendering created by kit designer @grhaer9. That concept places darker red chequers across the traditional base, accompanied by white logos and white sleeve trim.
It would represent a measured departure rather than a complete reinvention. Red would remain dominant, preserving the identity expected of a Liverpool home strip, while the chequered texture would provide greater depth when viewed up close.
There is an important qualification. Footy Headlines warned that the eventual product could “differ significantly” from the initial prediction. At this stage, the image should therefore be treated as an interpretation of leaked information, not a photograph of the completed shirt.
Even so, the reported “subtle tonal chequered pattern” offers a useful indication of the direction Adidas may be exploring. It suggests a manufacturer looking for distinction without disturbing one of English football’s most recognisable visual identities.
Adidas balance heritage with something more expressive
Liverpool home kits traditionally leave little room for radical experimentation. The club’s red is not merely a colour choice. It carries history, expectation and a powerful commercial identity.
Away and third shirts give designers greater freedom, but a home kit must look unmistakably Liverpool from the far side of a stadium. Any pattern must support the red rather than compete with it.
A darker chequerboard could satisfy both demands. Under ordinary light, the shirt may appear relatively restrained. Movement, stadium floodlights and closer inspection could then reveal the pattern and texture beneath the surface.
That approach would fit the broader challenge facing Adidas during its long-term Liverpool partnership. Nostalgia is valuable, particularly given the manufacturer’s celebrated history with the club, but heritage cannot become an excuse for endlessly repeating old designs.
The New Liverpool Home Kit for the 2027/28 season appears to offer a possible solution: familiar colours, clean white detailing and enough visual character to make the shirt recognisable as a new release.
Its success would depend on execution. Tonal patterns can give a shirt richness and personality, but overly prominent squares could make the design look crowded. The restraint suggested by the leak will be crucial.
Sponsor negotiations add uncertainty to early mock-up
The front of the shirt may ultimately provide a more significant change than the chequered design.
Standard Chartered appears on the speculative rendering, but Liverpool’s agreement with the bank is due to reach the end of its current term after the 2026/27 campaign. The relationship began in 2010 and has become one of the longest-running shirt sponsorships in the Premier League.
Liverpool chief commercial officer Ben Latty confirmed that discussions were continuing when he spoke to The Athletic.
“In terms of Standard Chartered, I don’t know what will happen at this point,” Latty said. “We still have another year, and conversations are ongoing.”
He also acknowledged the longevity of the partnership, adding: “Seventeen years is a long time, and it’s a great relationship. We’ll probably find out pretty soon what direction that’s heading.”
Liverpool are also holding discussions concerning Expedia, the club’s sleeve Sponsor. As a result, the 2027/28 season could bring changes to more than the shirt’s background pattern. The principal Sponsor, sleeve branding or both could be different when Adidas reveal the final design.
No replacement front-of-shirt partner has been confirmed. Until Liverpool announce an extension or a new agreement, the Standard Chartered branding shown on unofficial concepts should be viewed as a placeholder rather than a guarantee.
Summer 2027 reveal remains some distance away
Footy Headlines expects the Adidas Liverpool 2027/28 home shirt to receive its official release in summer 2027. Liverpool could choose to preview it at the final home match of the preceding campaign, although competitive circumstances may influence that decision.
Clubs sometimes debut a new strip before the season ends, but Liverpool would be unlikely to distract from a decisive fixture if major honours remained at stake.
For now, the leak provides an early glimpse rather than a final verdict. Fabric construction, collar shape, pattern strength and Sponsor branding could all change during the development process.
What appears increasingly plausible is the central idea: a traditional red Liverpool shirt given greater texture through darker chequers and finished with contrasting white details.
It is a concept that sits neatly between caution and experimentation. Adidas would preserve the visual language of Liverpool while ensuring the 2027/28 season has an identity of its own. Whether supporters embrace it will depend on how subtle that chequered pattern proves to be when the real shirt finally emerges.
