Liverpool return to Champions League action on Wednesday night as Atletico Madrid arrive at Anfield, and this feels like a significant opportunity for Andoni Iraola’s side.

After two draws from their opening two Premier League fixtures, Liverpool finally found their rhythm with a convincing victory over Ipswich. Alexander Isak’s two goals provided the headline, but the overall performance suggested that Iraola’s methods are beginning to take hold.

Now the challenge is to build on it.

Liverpool: Time to Turn Momentum Into a Run

Liverpool are flying after trouncing Ipswich and will look to gain real momentum against Atletico Madrid.

The most encouraging aspect of the Ipswich victory was not simply the scoreline. Liverpool looked sharper, more aggressive, and far more confident in how they attacked their opponents.

Isak’s arrival to form at the top of the attack is already beginning to look significant. Two goals in nine minutes demonstrated the quality he possesses, while Cody Gakpo’s two assists showed the value of retaining him despite the transfer speculation surrounding his future.

Florian Wirtz will also be central to Liverpool’s hopes. His ability to operate between the lines could be particularly important against Atletico, who will attempt to keep the spaces in front of their defence extremely compact.

Liverpool must resist the temptation to force the game. Atletico are experienced at frustrating opponents and will be perfectly happy to allow Liverpool possession before attempting to exploit any mistakes.

The Reds need to be patient, but they also need to maintain the intensity that Iraola demands.

This is the type of game where the Anfield crowd can make a difference.

Atletico Madrid: Simeone Has Problems to Solve

Atletico Madrid have some internal and structural issues that could make this a difficult evening for Simeone.

Julian Alvarez is reportedly unhappy after not getting his desired move to Barcelona, and that situation is hardly ideal heading into one of the season’s most demanding fixtures.

Simeone also has a lopsided defence to sort out.

Liverpool’s attacking movement could expose that imbalance, particularly if Wirtz is able to find pockets of space and Isak drags Atletico’s centre-backs away from their preferred positions.

Atletico remain dangerous, though. Nobody should underestimate a Simeone side in Europe. They are capable of making games extremely uncomfortable, slowing the tempo and turning individual moments into opportunities.

Liverpool therefore cannot afford to become complacent simply because Atletico have problems of their own.

The Spanish side will look to frustrate, disrupt and counter, and Liverpool’s defensive structure will need to be considerably better than it has been during some of the opening games of the season.

This feels like an opportunity for Liverpool to put down a marker.

The season did not begin particularly well, but the victory over Ipswich has changed the mood. Liverpool now have confidence, Isak has his first goals and Iraola has evidence that his players are beginning to respond to his methods.

Atletico Madrid will test Liverpool far more severely, but they are not without weaknesses.

If Liverpool can combine their attacking intensity with greater defensive discipline, they have every chance of making Anfield a very difficult place for Simeone’s side to visit.

The important thing is that Liverpool now need to build rather than start again.

One win can become two. Two can become three. And suddenly the season starts to look very different.
