Andoni Iraola has offered an encouraging update on Liverpool summer signing Bradley Barcola ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
For Iraola, this is where the serious stuff begins. His first Champions League match as Liverpool head coach comes with expectations already heightened by Friday’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town, a result that finally ended the Reds’ run of two successive 2-2 draws.
Alexander Isak scored twice at Portman Road, with Cody Gakpo supplying both assists, but there was another development worth noting. Barcola made his Liverpool debut from the bench, getting roughly 30 minutes under his belt after arriving without any pre-season match minutes.
That lack of preparation meant Iraola had little reason to rush the France international into action. With Atletico Madrid now arriving at Anfield, however, the situation appears to have changed.
Bradley Barcola ready for bigger Liverpool role
Barcola’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain represents another major attacking option for Liverpool, and Iraola has suggested that the winger can now handle a greater workload.
“He is ready to play more minutes. He has been training quite normally. The only thing is that he hasn’t had pre-season [games], but he is in a really good place,” Iraola said.
It is the sort of update Liverpool supporters will welcome. Barcola’s pace, direct running and ability to attack defenders one-on-one give Iraola another way of stretching opponents, particularly in matches where Liverpool are expected to control possession.
The Atletico game should provide a rather different examination from Ipswich, too. Diego Simeone’s side reached last season’s Champions League semi-finals before losing to Arsenal, and they will hardly arrive at Anfield intending to make life comfortable.
Iraola faces major European test
Liverpool exited last season’s Champions League in the quarter-finals, losing 4-0 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain. PSG subsequently retained the trophy by beating Arsenal on penalties in the final.
That gives Wednesday’s fixture an added edge. Liverpool have unfinished business in Europe, while Iraola is beginning a new chapter with a squad expected to compete at the highest level.
The historical record offers some encouragement. Liverpool have won four of their nine European meetings with Atletico Madrid, while Atletico have won three, with two draws. Liverpool have also won three of the five meetings played at Anfield.
The Reds have won the last three encounters, including the previous two at home, although their defensive record against Atletico hardly inspires complacency. Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet in those nine meetings, a 2-0 victory at Anfield in November 2021.
Barcola could change Liverpool’s attacking options
The most intriguing question is how quickly Barcola moves from useful substitute to genuine starter.
Iraola has already shown a willingness to manage his players carefully, and the winger’s lack of pre-season preparation explains the cautious introduction against Ipswich. Now that Barcola has competitive minutes behind him, Liverpool have greater scope to use him against Atletico.
Whether he starts or is introduced later, his presence gives Iraola another weapon. In a Champions League match where space may be scarce, that can matter enormously.
For Liverpool, the Atletico Madrid clash is about more than the result. It is an early test of Iraola’s methods on the European stage, and Barcola could be one of the players capable of making the difference.
