Alexis Mac Allister Contract Situation Raises January Questions for Liverpool

Liverpool might have expected the closing of the transfer window to bring a little calm. Instead, Alexis Mac Allister’s contract situation has ensured that January already feels uncomfortably close.

Speaking alongside Trev Downey on an Anfield Index podcast, Dave Davis examined Mac Allister’s comments about his Liverpool future and the consequences they could have when the transfer market reopens. The midfielder has two years remaining on his contract, but his public admission that he was disappointed not to receive a new deal has changed the conversation.

Davis highlighted Mac Allister’s words: “It makes me sad I didn’t get a new deal, but there is still time. I will give 100% until the last day I am here. We will see what happens.”

For Liverpool, those comments have created questions that could persist all the way to January.

Mac Allister Comments Put Liverpool Under Scrutiny

Davis was particularly struck by Mac Allister’s repeated expressions of disappointment and the midfielder’s explanation that discussions had taken place through his representative rather than directly with him.

Mac Allister said: “There wasn’t any direct conversation with me. It was with my agent. I don’t want to say things that were never said, but what I got from my agent is they weren’t in a position to renew me.”

Davis picked out that particular wording, describing “weren’t in a position to renew me” as an “interesting choice of phrase”.

Mac Allister also referenced teammates who had received new contracts, saying: “I see Dominic and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it. But at the same time, it makes me sad as I do get mine. But there is still time.”

For Davis, the timing created another issue, coming immediately before Andoni Iraola’s first Champions League match as Liverpool head coach.

January Could Become Crucial for Liverpool

The most significant part of the discussion concerned what happens next.

Davis believes Mac Allister’s contractual position could affect Liverpool’s negotiating strength if another club makes an approach in January.

“I don’t see how this helps at all cuz you’re going to have a player who’s going to have 18 months left on his deal in January,” Davis said.

He then outlined the negotiating problem Liverpool could encounter, suggesting interested clubs could use Mac Allister’s public comments and remaining contract length to reduce their offers.

Davis illustrated the point with a hypothetical example, explicitly stressing that he was inventing the figures: “We might have bid 65 million in the summer. Let’s call it 45 now because that’s what they can do.”

His conclusion was clear: “I don’t see how this Liverpool help helps us in any way in that sense.”

Camara Conversation Returns to Foreground

Another name inevitably entered the discussion, Lamine Camara.

Davis referred to continuing reports surrounding Liverpool’s interest in Camara and connected that discussion with the uncertainty around Mac Allister.

“Mac Allister out, Camara in. It almost feels like that’s been thrown right to the forefront again, doesn’t it?” he said. “And we’ll be talking about this all the way to January.”

Downey agreed that the situation had become complicated, while identifying the most positive possible outcome as Mac Allister rediscovering his best form and eventually earning another Liverpool contract.

Downey said: “The best case scenario here is that we get a rejuvenated Mac Allister who is actually being spoken about as a candidate for a new contract.”

Liverpool Face Decision Before January

Davis also questioned whether a lucrative new contract would ultimately fit Liverpool’s plans, particularly given Mac Allister’s age relative to the club’s other midfielders and the wider wage structure.

Whatever Liverpool decide, Davis believes the events surrounding Mac Allister have created an awkward business situation.

“Either way, whichever way we dress up or play this scenario, I’m not sure today was a good day for Liverpool in a business sense.”

That is where Liverpool now find themselves. Mac Allister has publicly emphasised his love for the club and promised to give “100% until the last day” he remains there. His contract situation, however, is now firmly part of the discussion.

The summer window has barely disappeared from view, yet Liverpool already have another significant question waiting for them as January approaches.
