This young defender was very good and never looked rattled on the biggest stage against a ferocious opponent.

Jérémy Jacquet continues to impress, and this performance against Atlético Madrid was perhaps his biggest statement yet since arriving at Liverpool during the summer.

There was always going to be a question about whether the young Frenchman could step into a Liverpool defence and immediately cope with the demands placed upon him. Those questions are rapidly disappearing.

Every game seems to bring more assurance and more confidence for the summer arrival, and he increasingly looks like a perfect replacement for Ibrahima Konaté.

Jacquet Shows His Composure on the Biggest Stage

Atlético Madrid are exactly the type of opponent who can make life extremely uncomfortable for a young centre-back.

Diego Simeone’s teams are aggressive, physical and relentless. They test defenders mentally as much as physically, constantly looking for opportunities to unsettle opponents and force mistakes.

Jacquet simply refused to be rattled.

His composure was arguably the most impressive aspect of his performance. Rather than panicking when Atlético increased the pressure, he continued to make sensible decisions, stayed tight to his man and showed the confidence to play his way out of difficult situations.

That is not something you can easily coach into a player.

There was a maturity to his performance that went well beyond his years.

He also demonstrated the physical qualities required at this level. Atlético were not going to give Liverpool an easy evening, and Jacquet was willing to compete, put his body on the line and deal with the physical battle.

For Liverpool, that is enormously encouraging.

The club lost Konaté and needed to find a defender capable of eventually filling a significant role. Jacquet was brought in as part of that succession planning, but performances like this suggest he may be ready to contribute far sooner than many expected.

The Perfect Konaté Replacement?

It is still early, and nobody should be rushing to declare Jacquet the finished article.

But the similarities are becoming increasingly obvious.

He has the physical presence, recovery ability and aggression required for Iraola’s high-intensity football, while also possessing the composure to defend when Liverpool are forced to retreat.

That combination is essential.

Iraola wants his defensive line to be brave, aggressive and capable of defending large spaces behind them. A centre-back who cannot cope with that responsibility will eventually become exposed.

Jacquet appears increasingly comfortable with it.

What is particularly exciting is that every performance seems to add another layer to his game. He looks more confident with the ball, more authoritative without it and increasingly willing to take responsibility.

Against Atlético, he looked like a defender who belonged on this stage.

Liverpool may still need another centre-back depending on how the squad develops, but Jacquet is making a very strong case that he can become a long-term fixture at the heart of this defence.

For me, he was Liverpool’s standout performer.

A huge European night, a ferocious opponent and a young defender who never looked overawed.
