SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Assets and Liabilities: The Fine Margins of Football

In their 2013 book, The Numbers Game, Chris Anderson and David Sally postulated that football was, in fact, a weak link sport - improving the worst player is more beneficial to a team’s success than an improvement on their best player. On the surface, this seems like a tough pill to swallow. How would adding,...

Liverpool 0-0 Man City: Who was the Man of the Match?

Riyad Mahrez's late penalty miss has left Liverpool fans pondering whether their side's goalless draw with Manchester City represents a point gained or two points dropped. On the one hand, the Reds could be thankful that they were not punished for what was an uninspiring performance, bereft of the anticipated vigour, but on the other,...

Key Stats as Reds’ Unbeaten Streak Clings On

Liverpool secured a breathless point at Anfield to go into the second international break still unbeaten following a 0-0 draw with Champions Manchester City. But what were the key stats from a hard-fought contest? Reds’ Attack Still Misfiring It would be unfair to describe Liverpool’s front three as going through a crisis, but there are clearly...

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City: Mahrez miss costs Citizens rare Anfield win

Liverpool kept their unbeaten Premier League start intact, just, as Riyad Mahrez's late penalty miss cost Manchester City the chance for a first league win at Anfield since 2003. A stalemate was the last thing expected between the country's two finest teams, but a mutual respect between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola saw chances few...

Player Ratings as Liverpool and City draw a blank

Far from the frenetic games we saw between these two last season, this was a pretty dull affair with Liverpool and Manchester City both locking horns in a goalless draw. There was drama, such as Riyad Mahrez's late penalty which was as successful as when Phil Jones steps up to the spot, alongside chances for...

Why Liverpool’s Defeat to Napoli Isn’t the End of the World

It was always going to come as something of a hammer blow, but Liverpool's first defeat that they really warranted being on the end of this season really does feel rather rubbish. It's not so much the fact that the Reds lost, but more so the fact that they went down with a bit of...

Is Gomez Actually Outperforming Van Dijk?

Cast your mind back to the latter stages of last season, when a clearly unfit Joe Gomez was struggling to impress. Utilised at right-back, the 21-year-old was a weak presence in frustrating draws against relegated pair Stoke City and West Brom, conceding a last-gasp free-kick that proved key in the latter. With Liverpool doing their best...

Aaron Ramsey is a terrible idea for Liverpool

Have you ever bought something gimmicky just to impress your friends and then regretted it later? In the fall of 1993, I confidently strolled into the first day of school rocking the LA Gear inflatable pump sneakers. And yes, they were called Regulators… mount up. It immediately dawned on me that the pump was going...

Liverpool v Manchester City Preview – Reds and City face-off in potential thriller

The Details Venue - Anfield, Liverpool Referee - Martin Atkinson Date & Time - Sunday, October 7th @ 16:30 Current Odds - Liverpool 13/8, Draw 13/5, Manchester City 17/10 Form Liverpool Form Liverpool's form has taken a definite hit over the last week or so. Yet, the most important fixture, in my view, was when Jurgen Klopp's men attained the most positive result of the...

Napoli 1-0 Liverpool: What went wrong?

In light of Liverpool's first truly meaningful loss of the season, perspective is important. The Reds are joint-top of the Premier League and are still well-placed to progress to the Champions League knockouts with back-to-back games against relative minnows Red Star to come. Still, the quite shambolic nature of the performance must be recognised. Some...

Observations as Liverpool falter in Naples

A team known for its frenetic, attacking football, it was the exact opposite in Italy as Liverpool failed to get out of first gear, stuttering across the pitch to give Napoli all three points in their second Champions League game. Here are the observations from the match. Gomez head and shoulders above the pack It was down...

Key Stats as Reds Falter In Naples – Napoli 1 Liverpool 0

A really disappointing night in Naples ended with Liverpool succumbing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli side. But what were the key stats as Liverpool lost control of their Champions League group? Attack Blunted As Reds Crumble There are no two ways about it, Napoli found a way to completely keep...

Milner The Man As Liverpool’s Midfield Thrives

When Liverpool bought Fabinho this summer, to accompany the already arriving Naby Keita, there was an expectation that the two would be an absolutely tour de force in Liverpool’s midfield. And whilst there is ample evidence to suggest that that will be the case when the two work their way into starting regularly for...

Panic at the San Paolo – Napoli 1-0 Liverpool

Panic! Our once vaunted attack leaves Italy with a whimper. The Ribena has run out for James Milner. Naby Keita left the pitch on a stretcher. Trent and Robbo looked gassed from the beginning. And City awaits... First Half All About Naby Each of the other Champions League ties were full of tricks, flips and goals galore....

Player Ratings as Reds are neutralised in Naples

Dreadful, absolutely dreadful. Liverpool's worst performance of the season so far rightfully punished with a late Napoli winner. The Reds were never at the races, with David Ospina not having to make a single save in the home goal. Onto Sunday, where it has to be better. Here are your ratings. Three players come away with credit Alisson...

The Year of the Studge?

When Daniel Sturridge entered the fray on Saturday night, there was a sense of something resembling relief. Even before he scored, the truth was that you felt Liverpool had a better chance of something happening with him on the pitch. That’s always been the impression with Sturridge. Whatever you think of the player, it’s hard...

The Reds travel to Naples to take on Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo. It promises to be an intriguing battle, and a win would put the Reds firmly in charge of...

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 1: A Tactical Breakdown

First of all, an apology from myself. I'm awfully sorry I haven't been able to discuss perhaps two of the most exciting games of the season - LFC vs. Spurs and LFC vs. PSG, as unfortunately, I have been without WiFi for the past two weeks. To make up for that, this is a...

Alisson Becker – Passing His First Big Test

Daniel Sturridge has rightfully gotten most of the attention after the nail-biting finale of the clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - what a strike that was. One the best compliments for that shot would be that even Alisson couldn't have saved it. Liverpool's new Brazilian keeper didn't have a whole lot to do...

Mo Salah Doesn’t Care About Being the Best Player in the World, and Neither Should You

London, England - After the events on Monday night at the FIFA best awards, Luka Modric has been named the best men’s player of the year. Pipping award ceremony regular Cristiano Ronaldo, who was ironically missing from this particular iteration of the event, and Mohamed Salah to the gong after a champions league winning...

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match For Liverpool?

After a series of glorious opportunities went begging, it was beginning to seem that it would simply not be Liverpool's day at Stamford Bridge, only for Daniel Sturridge to single-handedly stave off the agony of an impending defeat and spark celebrations befitting of a victory. From Eden Hazard's opener onwards, Liverpool were, without doubt, the...

But what were the key stats as the Reds snatched what might be a vital point in the title race? Sturridge Strikes Again Goals are something that elite strikers trade in....

Observations as Liverpool and Chelsea share the spoils

Liverpool, courtesy of a wonder strike from Sturridge late on, rescued a point at the Bridge, a point they deserved considering the display put in. Going by the performance of Chelsea, not many teams would get points at Chelsea, so this could be a big point as the season progresses. The key observations from this...

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool: Sturridge stonker preserves unbeaten record

Daniel Sturridge scored one of his finest career goals to earn Liverpool a late point at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard’s first-half strike had given Chelsea a lead that they preserved with comfort for much of the game, Mohamed Salah and his substitute Xherdan Shaqiri missing the Reds’ most glorious chances before Sturridge struck. Klopp opted to...

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool – Player Ratings as Daniel Sturridge worldie rescues point

Daniel Sturridge. Daniel Sturridge. Daniel Sturridge. If you're a Liverpool fan, the 1-1 draw against Chelsea should leave you with no other thoughts in your head. What. A. Goal. I'm going to spend my next two days exclusively watching that goal over and over again. If you aren't, I'm judging you. Here's how the rest...

Set Pieces – Fuelling the Reds’ Flying Start

No matter where you are from your local match commentator probably said something like: "Set pieces - Liverpool's long-term Achilles heel" when Eric Lamela scored against the Reds last at Wembley. That line is simply ignorant. Liverpool's set piece defence has been slowly and steadily improving for three seasons now. The same applies for...

Chelsea Cup Defeat Highlights How Far Liverpool Have Come

That winning run wasn't going to last forever, was it? Any Liverpool defeat generally has to be considered disappointing - although some under Roy Hodgson felt like a blessing in disguise - and Wednesday's League Cup loss to Chelsea did sting a little, especially given the nature of it. In the grand scheme of things, it...

Why Liverpool’s Recent Carabao Cup Woes Aren’t Too Worrying

For the second time in consecutive seasons, Liverpool crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle as they were beaten 1-2 at home by Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea. Despite putting in a fairly dominant display and having plenty of chances to seal their place in the fourth round, the Reds fell to defeat thanks...
