SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Player Ratings as Reds are rumbled by Hazard

There’s a point at 1-0 where Sarri sends on Eden Hazard because Chelsea are losing and they’re not finishing above Liverpool in the league anyway. Klopp doesn’t send Salah on because Liverpool are winning and they might finish above Manchester City. One amazing goal later and we’re all moody, get a win on Saturday and it’ll all...

Virgil Van Dijk & Joe Gomez: Liverpool’s Cornerstones?

I for one have been very excited about the form of Liverpool's defence of late, especially the pairing of Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk. This partnership may only be six games into the season, but there's the making of something special forming here. As football fans, we love to compare players to legends that...

Discussion: The Rival Player I’d Have at Liverpool

Personally, I love a hypothetical within the realms of football. They allow one to examine the possibilities and justify why their selection would be viable. Of course, these hypotheticals can border on the edges of insanity, almost irrelevance i.e. Which footballer would be able to the most kick-ups with a live chicken? (probably Leo...

Trent Alexander-Arnold Urgently Needs Bigger Pockets

Almost two years ago to the day, Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of the youngest players on the pitch as he created the opening goal, scored to put his side 4-0 ahead and was booked just before half time for half time in an all-action right-back performance for Liverpool U23 against Tottenham U23. He dominated...

Gini Wijnaldum: The Vital Cog in the Machine

When Liverpool signed Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle in the Summer of 2016, did anyone really expect him to become Liverpool’s number six during their best start to a season in their history? No, of course, they didn’t. And yet, here we are. What Liverpool fans did believe they were signing was a talented, if not sometimes...

Why it’s a good time to give Mo Salah a rest

The talisman of Liverpool's season last time out has looked a little out of sorts of late. Mo Salah enjoyed a season like no other last term and notched up countless goals, assists and match-winning performances that saw him crowned player of the year. At the start of this season, he has by no means played...

Liverpool 3-0 Southampton: Who Was Man of the Match?

Liverpool have made their best ever start to a Premier League season and, in truth, they have done so at about 50% of their overall capacity. The Reds cruised into a 3-0 first-half lead against the Saints and were able to comfortably see it out after the break. All a likely bored Alisson Becker really...

Observations as Shaqiri Makes a Happy First Impression – Liverpool 3-0 Southampton

Six wins out of six to start the Premier League season. Not bad, eh? Southampton came to Anfield, and Southampton were routinely dispatched. An own goal to start proceedings, a returning centre-back with a fabulous header off a corner from that trusted Scouse right-foot, and then the King of Egypt scoring from a yard out...

Key Stats From Liverpool 3-0 Saints – Easy Street

Liverpool sauntered back to the top of the Premier League after sleep-walking to a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield, making it six wins out of six without even breaking a sweat. But what were the key stats from the Reds’ stroll in the park against the Saints? Set Pieces and Late Goals Fuel Liverpool’s...

Liverpool 3-0 Southampton: Early excitement helps Reds to win

Liverpool’s 100% start to the 2018/19 season continued at Anfield with a comfortable win over Southampton. An early Wesley Hoedt own goal was followed in by goals from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah, a first-half demolition securing three more points for the Reds. There was a sense of intrigue on L4 as manager Jurgen Klopp handed...

Player Ratings as Liverpool make it six from six

Liverpool returned to the tip of the Premier League table at the weekend, coasting to a routine 3-0 win against Southampton. Here are the ratings from the match. Alisson: 6 Produced a decent save from Charlie Austin’s late effort but otherwise untroubled. Hard to find many things to complain about and the fact he’s away from the...

Liverpool v Southampton Preview – Key Battles

After a successful start to their UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday night, Liverpool are back in Premier League action at Anfield, as they welcome Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp's men are on a high, having won their first five Premier League games, but know they can't afford to slip up on this...

Is Andy Robertson Europe’s Most In-Form Left-Back?

Trace your mind back about 14 months and a huge amount of trepidation surrounded Liverpool's acquisition of Andy Robertson. Alberto Moreno's hit-and-miss form had called for an upgrade at left-back, with plenty of exotic-sounding names across Europe touted as ideal replacements, such as the forever Liverpool-linked Ricardo Rodriguez. Instead, Jurgen Klopp opted to sign a scrawny-looking...

Deconstructing Steven Gerrard’s Start at Rangers

As Rangers fans celebrated luring Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to Ibrox for a maiden senior management gig this summer, those at Anfield watched on with intrigued eyes. How would a man that had only experienced management at Youth Academy level fare when thrown in at the deep end, with limited funds, at a club where...

Stop Worrying About Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah has made a slightly below-par start to the season, and one that was exacerbated by his poor performance and misplaced pass that led to Mbappe’s equaliser in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over PSG on Tuesday night. But given that I am an unapologetic Mo Salah fan and have recently written articles saying that...

Observations as Firmino fires Liverpool to opening European win

And breathe. Liverpool are up and running in Europe once again by virtue of Roberto Firmino's last-gasp winner against PSG at Anfield. Three points that looked as if they'd been lost wrestled back by one moment of genius from the Brazilian - who needs more than one eye? Speaking of eyes, here's what I saw with...

Key Stats from the Bobby Firmino Show – Liverpool 3 PSG 2

Liverpool went top of Group C with a breath-taking 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield. But what were the key stats from a pulsating and thoroughly deserved win? Penalty Man Milner Just Keeps On Running  James Milner was once again damned close to being Liverpool’s best player, with a superb display in the middle of...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Man of the Match

Just three days after beating one of the best sides in the Premier League, Liverpool underlined their European ambitions by comprehensively outplaying, and battling past, a member of the continental elite. After Mohamed Salah's frustrating evening took a nightmarish turn when he conceded possession in the middle of the park in the lead-up to PSG's...

Liverpool Left Back Andy Robertson Now Emerging as a Leader

Andy Robertson's journey to becoming Scotland skipper and an Anfield regular following in the footsteps of Tartan team icons like Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish is a curious one. Released by Celtic in his early teens for being too small, he's proved the Bhoys academy coaches completely wrong by forging a top-flight career on both sides of...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: One-Eyed Firmino Makes His Mark

It’d be wrong to suggest this isn’t one of the toughest groups of the competition; Napoli and PSG present two scintillating trips while Red Star Belgrade are hardly pushovers having won the Serbian league last season. Under the floodlights, bouncing to the tune of ‘Allez Allez Allez’, Liverpool stepped out prepped and ready for...

Liverpool 3-2 PSG: Player Ratings as Bobby dazzles Anfield late

Liverpool made Anfield fret, but Liverpool had more late European drama at Anfield, as an injury time winner from Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a 3-2 win over Paris St. Germain and a winning start to their Champions League campaign. Daniel Sturridge's header and James Milner's penalty put the Reds on course, but Thomas Meunier...

The Firmino 9

Roberto Firmino was the perfect the false 9, then Klopp's number 9 and now the Firmino 9. Has Bobby redefined the centre-forward position for Liverpool during Klopp's tenure? When Liverpool signed Firmino from Hoffenheim, he was known as a goal scoring attacking midfield. Under Rodgers, he played as a wide forward and didn't appear to be...

Dominic Solanke – The Forgotten Cause

Dom Solanke is yet to even be named in the matchday squad this season. Having not played a game of football since pre-season, in which he did not particularly impress, this is only going to hinder the progress of the former Chelsea player. In his debut season he managed to score one goal in 21 appearances,...

Why football clubs are crazy about eSports?

Reel back a decade or two and nobody would have taken you seriously had you told them that electronic sports are going to be a multi-billion industry in 2018. Least of all serious, mainstream athletes. Playing competitive video games used to be the preserve of basement-dwelling riff-raff or social no-goods and wastrels. Now, these...

Integrating Fabinho and the Need for Patience

Patience isn’t a word that gets heeded much in the modern era of football. Instant gratification has been normalised and expected, and signings are often cast aside as “flops” in as short a space as six months. And that’s fine because some signings don’t work. But, if one casts their mind back to the final...

Tough UCL Group Presents Tough Choices For Klopp

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign kicks off on Tuesday, with the automatic qualification to the group stage giving the Reds some breathing room in the opening few weeks of the season to focus on the Premier League. The Group Stage draw didn't do Liverpool's Champions League odds any favours. In addition to an overmatched Red Star Belgrade, the...
