SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Liverpool leave Spurs bewildered in London

Liverpool aren't technically top of the table, surpassed by Chelsea on goal difference as the sun goes down on this Premier League Saturday. The Reds are, however, undefeated, having only allowed two goals in five and eased past Spurs in London. Liverpool now have more away points against top-six opponents than they amassed in...

Spurs 1-2 Liverpool: Man of the Match

A late Tottenham Hotspur goal made for an unnecessarily nervy finish at Wembley, but the eventual 2-1 scoreline certainly belied Liverpool's dominance. The Reds were, for the most part, in control against one of the best teams in the Premier League. They were able to repel Spurs' relatively rare attacks and sliced open an oft-revered...

Player Ratings as Liverpool makes it five from five against Spurs

Last season saw Liverpool’s visit to Wembley bring about one of their worst performances. Riddled with individual errors and defensive ineptitude, Spurs were able to beat the Reds at their own game and put down a marker of how far Klopp still had to take his side. Yet, it was a role reversal on...

The Truth About Mohamed Salah’s “Poor” Start to the Season

After a long and drawn out transfer saga last summer, Mo Salah joined the Reds with much optimism surrounding the Egyptian’s arrival, but no one could predict what would happen as the season unfolded. He managed a record-breaking 32 goals in the Premier League alone, unsurprisingly winning the Golden Boot, as well as claiming the...

Pressure on Klopp to Rotate Liverpool’s Starting Eleven

Having made just one change to his Liverpool side in the opening four games, continuity in selection will soon have to change for Jurgen Klopp. The Reds have only been playing one game a week up until now which enabled Klopp to name an unchanged side for the first three league games. Jordan Henderson...

Red Relationships and Lilywhite Hearts

Sometimes a relationship blows up and both parties end up locked in a contest to show the other what they could have had. The last time Liverpool faced Spurs in London the Reds were thoroughly and unmercifully dumped. Since that painful day, the main source of the drama, Dejan Lovren has been buried, resurrected...

Scouting Adrien Rabiot: PSG’s Smooth Operator

Liverpool are currently four from four in the Premier League and preparing for the commencement of their Champions League campaign; arming themselves to toil in a group that includes Red Star Belgrade, Napoli and the French Champions Paris St. Germain. But one of the French giants' star midfielders could well be on his way to...

Joe Gomez’s Road From Injury to First-Team Regular

From injury hell to being shoehorned in at right-back in Trent Alexander-Arnold's absence to staring centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, it's been quite the ride for Joe Gomez. It takes a hell of a lot of mental strength to overcome a cruciate ligament injury. Sitting on the sidelines for such a long period of time,...

Three More Players Liverpool Should Tie Down to New Contracts

In the wake of Liverpool’s captain, Jordan Henderson, penning a new long-term contract at the Club, many will be wondering who will be next to sign on the dotted line. In recent times, we’ve seen the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and now Jordan Henderson commit their future to the Reds, but there are...

Reaction to Lallana Setback Shows Fans Are Out of Patience

Adam Lallana's latest injury - a groin strain he picked up in England training - is only minor. It will be a cause of great frustration for the midfielder, who would have hoped to force his way back into starting contention for the Three Lions, but he should be back in action very soon. It...

Why Firmino is so Important for Liverpool

Liverpool are on the cusp. The cusp of something great. While the Reds let superstar Luis Suarez go, along with Philippe Coutinho, the side has managed to hold on to its solid - but not sensational – player Roberto Firminio. The new 5-year deal for the striker could prove the decisive in Liverpool’s success this...

Liverpool – No Longer a One-man Team

Back in January, Liverpool allowed one it's most prized assets, Phillipe Coutinho, to leave the club. At the time, fans wouldn't have been laughed at if they were worried, going into the business end of the season. However, the Reds kicked on, and as a collective reached the Champions League final for the first...

Liverpool Might Not Need Henderson, But Klopp Does

In this social media era, finding polarising topics is an easy thing to do. Liverpool fans are quite adept at it: even the most menial of topics are routinely obsessed and fought over. Jordan Henderson, however, is quite an intense case. To some, he is the underrated midfielder who ties Klopp’s plans together. To others,...

Time To Raise the Game – Liverpool FC Hitting Crunch Time

Liverpool have made an excellent start. That’s something that cannot be understated. The Reds have never made four wins out of four at the start of a Premier League campaign before, and have in fact won four league games in a row under Klopp just three times. This is the first time if you...

The Team That Was – Liverpool 1989/90

I was lucky enough to grow up in an era where Liverpool won an array of trophies on a regular basis. If we didn’t win the league one season, you could bank on us winning it the next; such was our dominance. Sadly, these trophies dried up to largely become few and far between. In...

Thomas Gronnemark and the Ever Evolving Jürgen Klopp

When it was announced towards the tail end of last season that Jurgen Klopp’s long-time deputy, Zeljko Buvac, would stand down from his position for the foreseeable future for “personal reasons” there was a disturbingly popular school of thought that this could have a detrimental effect on both Klopp and Liverpool. Many pointed to...

Mo’eyBall: Appreciation of the Undervalued at Liverpool

The word miracle is bandied around frequently in the modern world in an attempt to garner attention for rather mundane concepts. Diets, cures for disease, intervention from an omnipotent being etc. are often met with discourse and are cause for debate which may last until the end of time. Conversely to this, in the realm...

Hendocalypse

On the back of a lacklustre performance off of the bench against Brighton, and a poor start against Leicester, the usually PR conscious back office staff at Liverpool Football Club decided to announce a contract extension for Jordan Henderson. Okay, okay... For most clubs, a contract extension for the team captain in the prime of his...

An Uncertain Future for Dominic Solanke

Joining back in the summer of 2017, a lot of fans didn’t know quite what to make of Dominic Solanke’s arrival. Yes, he had the potential having earned plaudits from Chelsea’s former youth coach, Adi Viveash, but arriving at a time when Liverpool had just finished inside the top-four, fans wanted a bigger name...

Henderson Brings Out The Stubbornness In All Of Us

What better way to liven up the start of a tedious international break than to announce Jordan Henderson's new five-year deal at Liverpool? That certainly fired us all back into life, didn't it? The obsession and division that the Liverpool skipper causes among the fanbase is unlike any player in recent memory, with so many holding...

Liverpool Football Club – Not Panicking Anymore

Four games, twelve points, a single goal conceded. The supporters couldn't have hoped for a better start of the season. Or could we? The Reds aren't really blowing teams away, one can perhaps label our last two victories scrappy. Liverpool supporters can make a great case study on human nature. It's been exactly ten...

Klopp’s Patience: Taking His Time With Fabinho

Of all the coaching and man management attributes that see Jurgen Klopp rightly ranked amongst the elite managers in world football, patience is perhaps the German’s greatest virtue. A striking example of diligence is in the handling of his second most expensive Brazilian purchase of the summer, Fabinho. Arriving from French club Monaco for the...

Liverpool’s Midfield Imbalance

So far this season, Liverpool have accumulated 12 points after winning their first four matches of the campaign, even despite the Reds barely moving into second gear. Klopp's title challengers have thus far won 4-0, 2-0, 1-0 and 2-1, but in one of those contests, Liverpool struggled considerably to regain control more so than...
