SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Gini Wijnaldum – Liverpool’s New No.5

Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum. Seven midfielders, all of whom are justified in thinking themselves worthy of a starting position in the Liverpool line-up. Had you asked many fans which of the above would be looking for a club over the summer, the betting would suggest...

Red Rant: Foxy Klopp Not Ready to Contend

Ron Burgundy had three vulnerabilities in life... women, his dog Baxter, and the fact that he would read whatever was on the teleprompter. Our manager has a similar tick. If Jordan Henderson is available, he'll put him on the team sheet. It didn't matter that Emre Can was miles better. ...

Andy Robertson – Best Left-Back in the Premier League

I must confess that I was amongst those potentially frustrated when Liverpool decided not to spend big money on a left-back last summer, instead plumping for Hull’s Andy Robertson. However, once I did some digging on Robbo, as I have several friends who support Hull, the overwhelming response was that it was a very...

Key Observations as Liverpool grind out yet another win

A 4th goal for Mane and a first for Firmino ensured Liverpool came away with 3 points from the King Power Stadium. Liverpool were under tremendous pressure in the second half, not helped by their goalkeeper's penchant to dribble. The key observations from the win today. Disjointed Midfield Klopp made a single change to his starting line...

Leicester 1-2 Liverpool: Man of the Match

We're only four games into the season but already a familiar narrative has taken hold in the post-match reaction to Liverpool's victories. Once again, the Reds were far from their best - the furthest from their best they have been, in fact - but they managed to pick up three points, to hold on under...

A Lucky Escape? – Key Stats from Liverpool 2-1 Leicester

Liverpool make it four wins from four against Leicester City

Every season we band about how ‘it’s our year.' Liverpool will finally land that elusive Premier League title, surging to the top with Jurgen Klopp’s scintillating philosophy of football. Things never really pan out that way, though. This year feels different mind you. The Reds now have the depth of quality; Shaqiri, Lallana, Sturridge and...

Leicester City 1-2 Liverpool – Player Ratings as Reds win four in four

Alisson Becker gave Liverpool heart-attacks with a moment of madness in the second half to gift Leicester a goal, but first-half goals from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino were enough for the Reds to see off a brave Leicester fightback to gain another three points, with a fourth consecutive Premier League win to start...

The wait is finally over and Liverpool now know who they’ll face in the group stages of the Champions League as they hope to reach another European final. Roberto Firmino: Fewer Goals, Same Influence

When Roberto Firmino was denied by Mat Ryan in Saturday's gritty 1-0 win over Brighton, a nagging thought entered my mind immediately. "He's still looking for his first goal of the season", I thought, knowing full well where the current narrative is slowly heading towards Liverpool's brilliant Brazilian, rather than being worried about his form. The...

x-Pected Improvement Following Klopp’s Upgrade of the Spine

A mere 3 games into a highly anticipated new season and Liverpool sit atop the Premier League table. While it's still early days, with the integration of new players underway, it's extremely satisfying to see the club hit maximum points thus far. 9 points, zero goals conceded, firing at probably only 60-70% of our true level....

The Jordan Henderson Criticism

Three games, nine points, no goals conceded, top of the league. And we’re not even playing that well. West Ham, aside we haven’t quite been at our swashbuckling best. Firmino is yet to score and, if viewed objectively, we’ve had to hang on a bit in our last two games so we’re not quite at...

Is Van Dijk’s defence capable of underpinning a title challenge?

Liverpool’s £75m capture of Virgil van Dijk made him the most expensive defender in the world. Of course, eyebrows were raised left, right and centre given the size of such an investment; a good defender for Southampton but one worthy of such an outlay? Outsiders weren’t particularly convinced. Fast forward to the present and the...

A Plan of Adaptation: Fabinho Edition

Having spent £40m on Fabinho this summer, some fans would’ve expected him to come straight into the starting eleven and offer a blanket to the back-four we’ve not seen since the days of Javier Mascherano. Crunching into tackles and feeding the ball to his teammates higher up the pitch, his inclusion would bring Liverpool to...

Liverpool’s Bit-Part Players Essential To Fast Start

Three games in, and Liverpool’s start to the Premier League campaign has been impressive, if not necessarily electrifying. The Reds started explosively against West Ham, but in the following two games, against Palace away and Brighton at home, Liverpool have relied more on a strong and stable defensive base than their typical vibrant attacking...

An impressive start to the season from him and his teammates has ensured that Liverpool are now just 5/2...

Should We Have a More Balanced View on Michael Owen?

A disclaimer before I begin: I’m a Michael Owen fan.  I’m of an age that means that I was just starting to be aware of football, and starting to play football when Owen was at his peak. The first football match I can ever remember seeing on TV? Germany vs England, in Munich. He was...

Against Crystal Palace, Van Dijk was awarded the Man...

Rampaging Raumdeuters: Tactical Evolution of the Fullback

Thomas Muller is a peculiar footballer. The man is a genius. His...

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton: A Tactical Breakdown

On the final game of the 2017/18 season, Liverpool romped to a 4-0 victory against Brighton, but this time around, Chris Hughton was determined for the type of game and result to be completely different to the preceding meeting between the two sides. Reds Keep It Clean, Blanking Brighton 1-0

Another match, another battle, another clean sheet. On first observation, this one looked to have come with quite a bit more effort than the previous two; Palace and West Ham. After City dropped two points to Wolves, this match took on massive importance. Liverpool will need to get used to playing with the pressure...

Key Observations As Liverpool Eke Out Another Win

Liverpool maintained their 100% win rate as they overcame a dogged Brighton side to win by the odd goal. Liverpool had their chances but were not in their best rhythm as they struggled to convert those chances into goals. Brighton were solid for most part of the game and should not be disheartened by...

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton: Player Ratings from a nervy Anfield evening

Liverpool made it three Premier League wins in three games with a 1-0 win over Brighton at Anfield. A well-worked move was finished off by Mo Salah midway through the first half, and the Reds saw off the rest of the game with that lead intact. It was a game that meandered between uninspiring and...
